Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, which is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Dept. of Space, Govt. of India has released the admission notification for its UG programs, including its dual degree program that combines the undergraduate program with the postgraduate one. It is mandatory to have appeared in JEE (Advanced)-2021 exam and meet the other eligibility criteria to apply for admission to these programs.

One of the many major benefits of pursuing courses at IIST is that you get the opportunity to take up internships at an ISRO center as well as at other prestigious institutes in India, not to mention with international ones with which IIST has collaborations. You can also pursue a Fellowship in the USA, Canada, and Germany if you fulfill the eligibility requirements for it. The toppers of the B.Tech. programs are eligible to pursue their Master's Degree at Caltech, USA with full financial aid through a Fellowship, and may be employed later at ISRO.

The programs with number of seats are-

  1. B. Tech in Aerospace Engineering: 70 seats.

  2. B. Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (Avionics) [note- this course was earlier known as B.Tech. Avionics]: 70 seats.

  3. Dual Degree (B.Tech. in Engineering Physics + Master of Science/M.Tech.: 22 seats. This can be pursued in any of these-
    • Master of Science in Astronomy and Astrophysics

    • Master of Science in Solid State Physics

    • M. Tech. in Earth System Science

    • M. Tech. in Optical Engineering

Note- There are seats reserved for students of the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), for Jammu & Kashmir students under the Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS), and for women.

IIST B.Tech. Eligibility requirements

You need to be a citizen of India to be eligible for admission to the IIST programs. Citizenship: Only Indian citizens are eligible to apply for admission in IIST.

Other criteria are as follows-
Age: Your date of birth should be on or after 1st October 1996 if you are applying through the General, EWS, and OBC-NCL categories. In the case of applications through the SC/ST and PD categories, the date of birth should be on or after 1st October 1991. Note that the date of birth should be as the one recorded in the certificate of high school/first Board/or its equivalent, and in case the certificate does not have DOB, then, you are required to submit an authenticated document from a competent authority indicating the DOB at the time of accepting the seat for admission to the IIST course for which you had applied.



Educational qualification and marks: The admission criterion with regard to the minimum marks in the qualifying exam has been relaxed only for this year due to the pandemic scenario. Accordingly, you need to only qualify in one of the exams listed below-
  1. 10+2 final exam conducted by a recognized Board.

  2. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University exam conducted by a recognized Board or University.

  3. Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy (NDA) final exam (2-year course).

  4. National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Senior Secondary School Exam with a minimum of 5 subjects.

  5. Any Public School/Board/University exam in India or one from abroad that is recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

  6. H.S.C. vocational exam.

  7. General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.

  8. High School Certificate Exam of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

  9. In case the relevant qualifying exam is not a public exam, you should have passed at least one public exam, either of a recognized Board or a recognized Pre-University exam at an earlier level.

For the JEE (Advanced)-2021 exam, the minimum marks requirement is as follows-
  1. For General category candidates: At least 16% marks in aggregate and at least 4% marks in each of these three subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

  2. For EWS, and OBC-NCL category candidates: At least 14.4% marks in aggregate and at least 3.6% marks in each of these three subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

  3. For SC, ST, and PD category candidates: At least 8% marks in aggregate and at least 2% marks in each these three subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

How to apply for IIST B.Tech. courses

You have to register and submit your application online at the IIST admissions portal . Before starting the application procedure, read the information brochure carefully that is available on the IIST website and ensure that (a) you upload a copy of the same photo that you have used for the JEE (Advanced)-2021 registration, and (b) fill in the choice of the branch in order of preference for the UG and Dual Degree Programs at the time of registration, otherwise the registration will not be considered as completed.

Prior to applying, keep read the scanned copies of the following documents-
  1. Class 10 certificate if the date of birth is mentioned in it OR the birth certificate. Learn how to apply for a duplicate birth certificate .

  2. Mark sheets of Class 12 (or an equivalent exam) for those who appeared for this exam in 2020 and/or 2021.

  3. Certificates of Class 12 (or an equivalent exam) for those wo appeared for this
    exam in 2020 and/or 2021.

  4. The relevant reserved category certificate, if applicable, namely, EWS/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PD certificate. It should be noted that the certificate will be verified through proper channels during the verification process of documents at the time of admission, and till it is confirmed to be valid, the admission will be provisional. Submitting a false certificate is not only liable to make you ineligible for admission, but legal action may also be taken for doing so.

  5. The Transfer Certificate from the institute last attended.

You are also required to pay the registration fee online as follows-
  • Rs.600/- for Male candidates in General/ EWS/ OBC-NCL

  • Rs.300/- for Female candidates in General/ EWS/ OBC-NCL

  • Rs.300/- for all SC/ ST/ PD candidates

Once the documents are verified, a provisional Admit Card will be generated by the system, and once you get the intimation of this, you can download it from the same admission portal. This Admit Card is mandatory to be produced at the time of joining the B.Tech. program at IIST. It is also mandatory to submit a Medical exam report in the prescribed format that will be available during admission before the date intimated by IIST during the admission.



Admission schedule of IIST B.Tech. programs

The online registration and selecting of the branch preference begins on 6th October 2021 at 10 a.m. Other important dates are as follows-
Online registration closing date: 20th October 2021 at 3 p.m.
IIST Admission Rank List will be published on 21st October 2021 at 5 p.m.
Branch preference can be modified up to 5 p.m. on 22nd October 2021.
Seat Allotment/ Acceptance rounds and re-validation of the registration of candidates on the waiting list: 23rd October 2021 (tentative date).
Joining IIST: 30th November 2021, with 11 a.m. the reporting time. This will be either online or on campus, as per the pandemic situation prevailing at that time.
In case of vacancies, there will be a notification issued for Spot Admissions on 30th November 2021 at 2 p.m.
In the case of Spot Admissions, registration will be from 30th November 2021 at 4 p.m. up to 2nd December 2021, 9 a.m.
Further Spot Admissions in case of vacancies will be done online on 2nd December 2021 at 11 a.m.
Final closing of Admissions: 4th December 2021.
IIST classes will begin on 7th December 2021 either online or on campus, as per the pandemic situation prevailing at that time.
The induction program will be from 2nd December to 6th December 2021 either online or on campus, as per the pandemic situation prevailing at that time.
The last date for joining is 10th December 2021.

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, came into existence in the year 2007. It is a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The institution is an autonomous institution under the Department of Space (DoS), Government of India. It offers UG/PG courses in various engineering streams including niche areas like Nanotechnology, Geoinformatics, Machine Learning and Computing, Astrophysics, Space robotics etc. The basic idea behind establishing this institution was to produce quality manpower in engineering for working in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) which is the apex organisation in our country for matters related to space research and projects.

The institute offers 18 courses (2 UG, 1 dual UG+PG, and 15 PG). These courses are -

The reservation policy of the Government of India is applicable for this institution for admissions also and category-wise reservation is as follows -

Scheduled Castes (SC) - 15%; Scheduled Tribes (ST) - 7.5%; Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) - 27%; Persons with Disabilities (PD) - 5%; Economically Weaker Section (EWS) - seats to the extent of 6 (six), 6 (six), and 2 (two) seats (10% of last year's total strength) in the branches of Aerospace Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Dual Degree, respectively, is reserved.

It is mandatory that the EWS category candidates should produce, at the time of document verification, EWS certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed format given in Appendix–I on the institute website.

Candidates belonging to SC/ST categories should produce the original Scheduled caste/tribe certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed format given in Appendix–II on the website at the time of document verification. Seats remaining vacant under the SC/ST categories shall not be filled by candidates belonging to any other category but seats remaining vacant under the ST category shall be allotted to SC candidates.

The OBC-NCL candidates should produce the certificate issued on or after 1st April 2021 by the competent authority in the prescribed format given in Appendix–III on the website at the time of document verification. OBC-NCL category candidates are also required to submit a declaration/ undertaking in the format given in Appendix-IV on the website.

5% seats are reserved for PD Candidates having at least 40% physical impairment. They should produce, at the time of document verification, the original certificate, issued by a district medical board/ competent authority.
