PM Scholarship Scheme 2021-22 for Ex-Servicemen, Ex-Indian Coast Guard wards and widows

The Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB), Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India has issued the notification for applications for the Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) for the academic year 2021-22. The scholarship is open only for dependent wards of Ex-Servicemen/Ex-Indian Coast Guard personnel and their widows for admission to higher technical and professional courses in India. However, those who have availed of the benefit of the scholarship earlier are not eligible to apply for the PMSS 2021-22.

Overview of PMSS

There are 2750 scholarships for girls and an equivalent number for boys. The scholarship amount will be paid every year for the duration of the course, for a period of one to five years, as applicable. The amount is Rs.30,000/- for boys and Rs.36,000/- for girls.

PMSS Eligibility requirements

Only those students who are dependent wards/widows of Ex-Servicemen and Ex-Coast Guard personnel can apply for the scholarship. The wards of civilians, including those of para-military personnel, are ineligible for the scholarship.

Age criteria: In the case of male wards, the maximum age limit is 25 years at the time of admission in the said course, while for female wards, it is till she gets married. There is no age limit for a candidate who is a widow till she gets remarried.

Further requirements are-
You can apply for the scholarship only if you have already secured admission in the first year (not for lateral entry admission and integrated programs) with a minimum score of 60% and above in the 10+2/Diploma/Graduation qualifying exams.

If you are studying in the second year or a subsequent year, then you are not eligible to apply, except for integrated courses, where the first portion is academic and the second portion is integrated as a professional course. Minimum Eligible Marks in MEQ

Since the Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) for entry to various professional courses differs, you need to ensure that you do fulfil the MEQ criteria before applying for the scholarship. Thus, you need to qualify with 10+2 or Diploma or Degree as applicable and also obtain a minimum of 60% marks.

Courses eligible for PMSS

When applying for the scholarship, you should have taken admission to any professional Degree Course, such as M.B.B.S., BDS, B.Pharm., B.Ed., B.E., B.Tech., BBA, BCA, etc. that is recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), University Grants Commission (UGC), the Medical Council of India (MCI), or other Govt. regulatory authority of the course, as applicable.

Who cannot apply: Other than MBA and MCA courses, students who are enrolled in Master Degree courses are not eligible for the scholarship. Also ineligible are students studying abroad and those who have taken admission to a distance learning course. You cannot apply for PMMS if you are a recipient of a scholarship or getting a concession from some other source the amount of which is more than the amount given by PMSS.

Scholarship for Integrated Courses

In the case of an integrated course, that is, where you have taken admission to a dual degree program, the Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) will be 10+2 and you must upload all the mark sheets of the first year and the second year (of all semesters) where the first course is non-professional. It is important to note that only the professional component of an integrated course will be eligible for the scholarship.

Application procedure for Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme

You have to apply online mode only at the KSB PMSS portal and only for one course. No paper applications will be accepted.

Ensure that you scan the originals of all required documents and not the photocopy of a document as the original will have better clarity, and the uploaded documents should be in only pdf/jpeg/ jpg format only. The documents include mark sheets, Aadhaar Card, the first page of the bank passbook, digital photo, etc. Refer to the full list-

After award of the Scholarship

Once you receive the scholarship amount from KSB, you must log in to your account at the KSB website and update Column 14 of the Renewal Application form, by entering the requisite details in the two columns, namely (i) date of payment; and (ii) amount. Note that this is essential to avail of the PMSS, otherwise the scholarship that was awarded to you will be cancelled and the money already paid will be recovered. After entering the details, click on the 'Save' button. This process must be done right away once you receive the scholarship amount for each instalment.

Further, while the scholarship amount of the first instalment is paid as soon as the selection is done in the merit list, in the case of the subsequent payments, you must submit the online renewal application on completing each academic year of the course, right till the end of completing the course. It is mandatory to clear all the requisite exams of the course in the first attempt itself. If you fail in the exam or re-appear for an exam or make any subsequent attempt again for any reason, then you will not be eligible to continue to get the scholarship benefits.
