IIIT Hyderabad - A brief synopsis
IIIT Hyderabad or IIIT-H stands for International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. It is a private deemed university in India that offers courses related to Computer Science & Engineering and Electronics & Communication. IIIT-H was established in the year 1998 in a joint not-for-profit public-private partnership with active support from the then State Government of Andhra Pradesh. It is located near Gachibowli, a prime location in Hyderabad, famed for the numerous offices of software companies. Strategically located on the Professor CR Rao Road, it is also close to top-notch institutes like the Indian School of Business (ISB) and the University of Hyderabad (UoH). The institute has easy access to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport as well as the railway stations. The nearest railhead is Lingampally Railway Station, which is at a distance of 7 km from IIIT-H.
Speaking about the IIITs, there are more than 26 IIITs that dot the country. However, IIIT Hyderabad is unique amongst them. Almost all other IIITs go by the name Indian Institute of Information Technology, whereas IIIT-H stands for International Institute of Information Technology. Moreover, IIIT-H is a public-private partnership, whereas the other IIITs are mostly government-owned. IIIT Hyderabad is also different from conventional engineering colleges like the IITs, NITs, BITs, VITs and SRM, in the sense that it offers only two disciplines, namely, Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) and Electronics & Communication (ECE), whereas the other institutes offer a basket of disciplines. Since the institute offers courses related mainly to the computer science field, it is as such, highly renowned for its CSE courses and the coding culture.
Both the above two disciplines, namely the CSE and ECE are offered at various levels of study. There are undergraduate programmes, dual degree programmes, postgraduate programmes and doctoral programmes as well. Various specialisations are also offered, especially for the dual degree programmes, which are of five years in duration. The undergraduate programmes are of four years and the postgraduate programmes of 2 years. The other unique thing about IIIT Hyderabad is its various modes of entry for its undergraduate courses. In the following paragraphs, we get to learn about these various admission modes for the undergraduate programmes in detail. Why IIIT Hyderabad
Before we learn about the various modes of entry to IIIT Hyderabad, let us first know why IIIT Hyderabad is so popular amongst students for its computer science courses. Offering just two disciplines, the number of students here is not very high, just around 1500 or so from all the courses and years combined. Built on 66 acres of land, the campus is quite small in size when compared with giants like the IITs and NITs. Its NIRF national ranking is 42, a bit on the lower side compared to its reputation. That is perhaps because of its limited infrastructure and limited disciplines on offer. Notwithstanding the size of its campus, student population or the NIRF ranking, IIIT Hyderabad is nevertheless rated very highly by students as well as the corporate sector, especially the software industry. No wonder, the placements that are offered to graduating students here is one of the highest in the country, even matching that of the top IITs.
All that has been possible because the courses that IIIT Hyderabad offers to its students are excellent ones and even rival those offered by the old IITs like IIT Mumbai, IIT Delhi, IIT Mumbai and others. Rated amongst the best for its coding culture and focus on computer science education, IIIT-H has helped its students make it big in various coding contests. The ACM ICPC World Finals is one such contest, where IIIT-H students have outshined others. The institute and its faculty are so focused on coding that they ingrain the coding culture into the students right from the first semester itself. not just the 4-year undergraduate course but the 5-year dual degree programmes are also highly recommended. These 5-year programmes are unique in the sense that they offer advanced levels of research at the undergraduate level itself. Over the years, IIIT Hyderabad has emerged as the top institute in India with the highest number of GSoC (Google Summer of Code, an international programme by Google, where it offers a handsome stipend to select students for their software coding projects during summer internship) selections. In this respect, it has left all the IITs and NITs way behind.
With its focus on computer science and coding, it has one of the best labs and research centres for its small number of students, thus giving them ample opportunity to utilize the resources to the optimum. At IIIT-H, it does not matter whether you are a CSE or an ECE student, coding is very much part of every curriculum. No wonder, IIIT Hyderabad students are able to bag one of the highest placements in India every year. The average placement for the B.Tech CSE students is around Indian Rupees 30 lakh per annum and for ECE students the corresponding figure is 24 lakh. The placement figures have been rising every year. The institute has been reporting 100% placement every year.
