Located in Kerala, the university has a unique PG program conducted by the Kannur University's Department of Wood Science and Technology in association with The Western India Plywood Ltd. Valapattanam (Asia's leading wood-based industry). As part of this program, students need to undergo in-plant training at The Western India Plywood Ltd. Valapattanam(WIP). This training will be for two months per Semester and a total of eight months during the entire program. Also, as part of this training, students will receive Rs. 5000 per month as a scholarship. One important feature of this Masters's program conducted by Kannur university is that students who complete the course are awarded a 2-year Work Experience Certificate jointly by The Western India Plywood Ltd and Kannur University in addition to the regular University Degree Certificate. Field visits, as well as industry visits, are part of this program so that every student will get a good exposure. Initially named Imperial Forest Research Institute, FRI came into being in the year 1906. The Institute of Wood Science and Technology functions under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and is located in Bangalore, India. The institute is an autonomous body of the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, and has research divisions in Wood properties and uses, wood processing, forest protection, Silviculture and forest management, facilities and services, etc. An Advanced Woodworking Training Center (AWTC) located at the Institute of Wood Science & Technology (IWST) was a joint venture between the Indian Government (IWST), Italian Government (Italian Trade Commission, ICE) & ACIMALL (Italian Woodworking Machines and Tools Manufacturers Association) from 2003 to 2011 and is now run by the Institute of Wood Science and Technology at Bangalore.
