An essay on the fundamental duty to safeguard public property and to abjure violence

In our democratic set up the citizens have been provided certain constitutional rights and duties to live with dignity and honour. One of the duties is to safeguard public property and abjure violence. This essay covers that aspect in detail.

Introduction

Our constitution has provided all of us with certain fundamental rights and duties to live in our country with dignity and honour. Each and every citizen is entitled to these basic rights which is definitely a great privilege that has been bestowed on us. At the same time, the citizens of the country have certain responsibilities and duties to adhere to in order to make the nation progress and prosper in the desired direction.

The government and the administrative machinery under it have a great role to play in nation-building and overall development. It has to carry out this mammoth task with great responsibilities as well as under the directive principles of the constitution of India. Everything is well laid out in the constitution beginning with the fundamental rights and duties and it is imperative that government has to work under that framework and do the needful for the progress and prosperity of the society.

Role of Government

Government has many responsibilities and one of them is to provide basic facilities, amenities, and infrastructure to all the people of the country. As government collects taxes and other revenues from the public and business houses in the country it utilizes that money mainly for infrastructure and development projects. Consequently, we have roads, bridges, flyovers, water, electricity, sanitation, and many other facilities available to us through government projects. Citizens have to understand that all these facilities are meant for their own convenience and to make their lives easy. It is imperative that citizens should take care of all these facilities and see that no harm or destruction is done to them by any element of society.

The destructive minds

Unfortunately, there are some evil elements in the society who do not see things from that perspective, and for realizing their selfish motives and self-interest they sometimes resort to the destruction of public properties and provoke other innocent and gullible people to do the same thing. This is a very serious and foolish offence in the sense that we ourselves are destroying those facilities which are meant to give us comfort and convenience. The citizen should understand the fact that these facilities are made for them only and they should resist any effort by any such agency to create destruction of public property in any way. Destruction and harm to the public property is not only a direct loss but common people are put to a lot of inconveniences because of those damages and it is not an easy task to replace those damaged facilities with new ones.

Another important issue in this matter is that there are some bad elements in the society which create rift and conflict between different religious groups or political parties or any rival groups and then during that agitation and violence create destruction of public property as well as loss of precious human lives. This unwanted violence is a serious threat to the nation's internal affairs and these things make a nation weak and prone to external attacks. The external forces are always for the lookout for these situations when the country becomes weak due to internal conflicts. The good citizens will avoid such violence and in fact, help the administration in nabbing the culprits who are creating these disorders from time to time in society or public places.

Role of citizens

A good citizen is one who takes care of the public property like one's own property and knows that it has to be maintained and kept in good conditions so that other people can make use of it. Government has police and other controlling mechanisms to take care of these things but what is more important is the contribution of citizens in making the country to become a peaceful and amicable place. It is imperative that no government can be successful without the wholehearted support and cooperation from its citizens. In this context, the contribution of the citizens is of immense importance.

Conclusion

Government is having the authority to make law and order in the country and has ample power to bring the culprits to books but until the citizens are aware and conscious of their part in the democratic set up no government can be successful in its efforts of national development. In essence, it is the duty of each and every citizen to safeguard public property, avoid violence, and help the government in achieving a robust progressive model for the country.

It is the fundamental duty of all citizens to safeguard public property. But unfortunately, many people think that destroying them is our fundamental right. In fact, many of them even don't know about fundamental duties but are aware of the fundamental rights. In any agitation, the loss will be to the buses of State road transport corporation only.
During my high school days, there was a big agitation for a separate Andhra State. The students were involved. The goons with the political support did great damage to the public property. But the police arrested the students and sent them behind the bars.

If the public property is damaged the government has to repair or repurchase their assets and for that they will increase the taxes and this fact is not recognized by many of these people.

If all the people unite and decide not to destroy the public property, there will be a lot of saving to the government and we will not have to pay the penalty. This fact should be known to all people. The main problem in India is that the political parties and the leaders never care for the country but concentrate more on their personal well being only.

Dr Rao, you are very correct that until the citizens take care of the public property as their own property we will not be able to safeguard the public property from the bad elements. Each and every citizen has to contribute in protecting the public property. Then only our nation can progress and prosper ahead.
