BIRAC Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) 20th Call for February 2022

The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), New Delhi, has invited applications for the 20th BIG Scheme—Biotechnology Ignition Ideas (Igniting New Ideas) for February 2022. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Government of India established the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) as a non-profit organisation under Section 8, Schedule B (Public Sector Enterprise). Its principal objective is to strengthen and promote the growing biotech industry through a single-window platform. It was created to conduct strategic scientific research at the interface of industry and academia. Leveraging advanced and new technology enables the production of high-quality, cost-effective products with national relevance. In order to carry out the major components of its purpose, BIRAC has partnered with a multitude of national and international organisations. It has introduced a number of programmes, networks, and platforms aimed at bridging the gap between industry and academic innovation research. The organisation assists through targeted funding, IP management, and technology transfer.

The BIG 20th, Call February 2022

The programme allows technology innovators and entrepreneurs to pursue a potential technological idea and develop and validate a proof of concept (POC). The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) has called for applications for the Biotechnology Ignition Grant-Igniting New Ideas. BIRAC has already supported 700 ideas.

Major areas of research and innovation will include:
  • Agricultural and allied areas
  • Clean Energy and the Environment
  • Drugs, Vaccines, and Drug Delivery
  • Healthcare and Life Sciences
  • Industrial Biotechnology
  • MedTech Devices and Diagnostics
  • Veterinary Sciences
  • Waste Management and Sanitation

Important Features of the BIG Scheme

This programme will support high-level biotech innovation and the proposal of basic or fundamental research programmes will not be considered under this programme. Implementation and Mentoring through BIRAC's BIG Partners and nearby associate partners, C-Camp, Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT-IITD), IKP Knowledge Park, Venture Centre, SIIC Incubator, NAARM, SINE IITB etc. The total grant-in-aid under this programme will be up to Rs.50 lakhs. The duration of the BIG call will be a maximum of 18 months.

Eligibility Requirement

Eligible entities who can submit their proposals may be individuals or businesses (start-ups) with an innovative idea that has the potential for commercialization.

Individual: Individual entrepreneurs can be research scholars, scientists, faculty members, or graduate students in any discipline. They must be incubating at a bio-incubator or plan to do so.

Start-ups: A start-up may be any registered private company or any LLP incorporated on/ after 1st January 2017. This means it must have completed 5 years since its incorporation.

How to Apply

Candidates with an innovative idea with commercialization potential should go to the official website of BIRAC and apply through the official link (the link for application submission is also provided in this article). The entities that are applying must note that the online application can be submitted under the BIG scheme. The candidate must register by visiting the BIRAC home page. Registrations can be done round the clock till the registration window is open. After registration, the proposal details must be submitted. Please note that entities that have already received a BIG grant earlier will not be considered.

We are living in an age of innovation and entrepreneurship. BIRAC Biotechnology Ignition Grant 2022 is definitely a good opportunity for those innovators who have the requisite experience in the matter and are already incubating their ideas in some private labs. They can try to grab this opportunity for getting the grant for completing their ideas in a convenient way using the financial facilities being provided by BIRAC.
