Are you interested in mathematics and computing, a field picking up fast as one of the most sought after courses in engineering? Want to study the same at IISc Bangalore, India's best university as per NIRF rankings? Learn here the details of the programme, launched for the first time in IISc Bangalore.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is one of the premier colleges for science and technology in India. With a NIRF 2021 rank 1 in the university domain, as well in research, the institute has no match in the country, when it comes to higher education studies in the field of science and technology. Overall, amongst all educational institutes in India, it holds NIRF rank 2; first being IIT Madras. IISc has consistently been ranked at the top in India for years together. The institute is the first choice for almost everyone who wants to engage in research work and become a scientist, technologist or academician. Apart from numerous M.Tech and PhD programmes, the institute offers a number of undergraduate programs. These are mainly the B.Sc research programmes that are of four years in duration. B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing is a new addition to the list of undergraduate programmes at this institute.

About the program

The B.Tech Mathematics and Computing programme is the first of its kind at this institute. Considering the popularity of the programme across all major engineering colleges in the country, this is the first time that such a programme is being launched at the institute this year. Admission to the programme is through the JEE Advanced Examination. Those scoring very high ranks in the exam are likely to qualify for admission to the programme.

The program is of four-year duration, in which the students will be imparted a solid understanding of new developments in the field of applied mathematics. Applied mathematics now has a lot to do with information generation, its distribution, storage and utilization. The mathematics & computing programme focuses on imparting computational and data analytic skills that form the backbone of many of the new emerging disciplines related to computer science such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Computational Engineering and Quantum Computing. These emerging fields are the drivers of future technologies that are going to revolutionize the information technology sector and will see wide applications in every known field, be it education, healthcare, agriculture, communication, transportation, space, aviation, energy generation, robotics, environment protection and so on.

Why take up this programme at IISc

By taking up this programme at IISc Bangalore, students are likely to benefit immensely. These days, there is a huge demand for manpower in these emerging technologies in India as well as abroad. Over the years IISc Bangalore has built such a high reputation that industries and institutions alike, seek students graduating from here. Furthermore, there will be many avenues for higher education and research in the sector at the institute itself and elsewhere too. Programme structure

The programme is of eight semesters, out of which the first four semesters will focus on the core subjects. there will be six courses each in mathematics and computing along with those in science, other engineering disciplines and humanities. Subjects like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computational Science, Computational Biology, Quantum Computing, Computer Science, Signal Processing and Mathematical Finance will be covered in depth. There are also a vast number of electives to choose from. In the fourth year of their study, the students will get the opportunity to engage in industry projects or research work. They also get the option to continue for another year and thus obtain an M.Tech degree as well by completing the required courses and credits.

Eligibility criteria

The applicant should be class XII pass or equivalent from a recognised board, including state boards. Should have taken Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects in 10+2 along with a language and a fifth one that could be anything apart from the ones already taken.

Number of seats

The total number of seats for the programme are 52, out of which 8 (20%) seats are reserved for female candidates as supernumerary seats and 4 (10%) seats for OCIs, NRIs and foreign nationals.
