Other than age, the main criterion to apply for the 25% quota is that the child should be from a low-income family. The admission can be sought in a school recognized by any of the education Boards, namely, ICSE, CBSE, etc. No school fee will be charged once admission is obtained through this quota, as the fees are covered by the State Education Dept., Govt. of Maharashtra. Note that an application does not guarantee admission, as this is based on a lottery system only.

Before applying, it is advisable to read the FAQs, go through the user manual, and read other important instructions (a few are given as quick references at the end of this article). Also, parents can check out the District wise schools under 'List of Schools' on the home page of the official website. Select the District, then select 'By Block' where you can select the Block, and then select 'RTE'. You will then see the complete list of schools in that Block. On clicking on the school name, you will right away know the RTE seats that are available for which Class, the number of seats, and the age criteria.

Eligibility requirements

The child's family should have an annual income that is collectively less than Rs.1 lakh, and the child should be from a disadvantaged group, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and those suffering from 40% or more disability. Children from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), including Vimukta Jati Nomadic Tribes (VJNT), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Special Backward Class (SBC) are also eligible to apply.

RTE admissions online registration and application procedure

You have to register online at the Maharashtra RTE online portal 2022-23.

First click on 'Online Application' and on the next screen click on 'New Registration' and enter the child's complete name with the last name first, then the first name, and then the middle name. Next, put the child's date of birth, the District in which the current residence is located, the mobile number, and the email ID. Check if the information is correct (note that the date of birth cannot be changed later), and click on the 'Register' button. On successful submission, you will get a user name and a password on the mobile number that you had provided.

Now you can go to 'Existing User Login' and log in with that user name and the password, and proceed to fill up the online application form for Maharashtra RTE admissions 2022-23.

Fill up the required information about the child, the address, etc and select the school (up to 10 schools) to which you wish to get admission for your child. This school must be located within 1km and up to a maximum of 3kms distance from where you are residing. In the allotment process, the first priority will be to a school within 1 km, and then others up to 3kms. In case no seat is available and you may possibly be allotted one that is further than 3 km. away, then you will be required to arrange for dropping off and picking up of the child from the school/pay the school bus fee (if the school bus facility is available). For convenience, a link to the Google Map is provided so that you can get accurate coordinates of the location of your residence.

Documents required

You are not required to upload any documents but keep nearby the relevant documents so that you can accurately fill in the required details. For example, the address that you enter in the online application form should match the document that has your address on it. This can be any one of these- (i) the house Ration Card or (ii) Electricity Bill or (iii) Water Bill or (iv) Telephone Bill or (v) Property Tax Receipt or (vi) Passport or (vii) Driving Licence or (viii) Bank passbook (of a nationalised Bank only) or (ix) Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) or (x) Aadhar Card.

What to do after selection

The status of the application can be checked through 'Application Wise Details' that you can see on the home page of the official website.

On getting a seat for admission to the school, parents should log in to the same website and download the Admit Card. A printout of this Admit Card should be taken to the school along with the required documents required for admission. Other than proof of residence as given in the example above and the child's birth certificate and his/her recent photo, the relevant certificates should also be produced for verification of documents. It is advisable to take the originals as well as one set of copies of the documents.

In the case of a Caste certificate in the name of the child or the parent, then it must be issued by the relevant official authority. This could be the Sub Divisional Officer (Revenue) or Deputy Collector. In the case of the Disability Certificate for admission for a disabled child, the certificate must be issued by a Civil Surgeon/Superintendent of a Government-notified hospital and should clearly indicate the disability as more than 40%.

In the case of admission for a child in the EWS category, it is necessary to submit the child's birth certificate, a recent passport size photo, proof of residence attested by an official authority, an income certificate issued by the Revenue Officer (this person should not be below the rank of a Tahsildar), and a Salary slip/Employer's certificate of either of the previous two years which indicates that the income is less than Rs.1 lakh.

Documents that are required to be submitted for orphans, children of a widow or divorced mother should be checked from the official website.
