About Indian Statistical Institute

Indian Statistical Institute is a premier institute under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), Govt. of India. Established in 1931, it is one of the oldest institutes in India that primarily focuses on the field of statistics. As early as 1959, the institute was accorded the status of an 'Institute of National Importance' by an act of the Indian parliament. As such, the institute, with its headquarter in Kolkata and centres at different places across India, is more of a university offering various undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D Programs. Before 1959 the institute used to be affiliated with the University of Calcutta. When it comes to the field of statistics and quantitative economics, besides courses on computer science and other related sciences, the institute is recognized as one of the best in the world. In fact, its early reputation was such that the first statistical institute in the United States at North Carolina was modelled on ISI Kolkata.

About the program

The certification program on business analytics and data mining will equip the participants with the required skills in various kinds of statistical and analysis skills. The techniques taught will be helpful to the participants in carrying out tasks related to business analytics and data mining. The skills will come in handy when exploring and analyzing businesses and their performance. The participants will come across various statistical and machine learning techniques. Some of the concepts being taught in this course are insight development, data cleaning, and building predictive & explanatory models in R. The course will also focus on machine learning and deep learning, topics that are finding increasing popularity. R-studio and MS-Excel will be used for covering the various concepts.

The entire course will be covered in six modules as given below.
  1. Module-1: Introduction - Basic concepts, descriptive statistics and exploratory data analysis (EDA)
  2. Module-2: Basics of explanatory and predictive analytics, estimation and hypothesis testing, and concepts of machine learning (ML)
  3. Module-3: Prediction Modeling – I (Regression and Classification)
  4. Module-4: Time series analysis, survival analysis and tree-based methods survival analysis
  5. Module-5: Prediction Modeling – II: Logistic regression and ML techniques boosting methods
  6. Module-6: Association rule mining, clustering, neural networks (advanced) and introduction to deep learning

After every module, there will be an objective (MCQ) based test that the participants will have to appear. A final online test will be held at the end of the sixth module. In every alternate module, the participants will be assigned assignments that they will have to submit in the next module.

Whom the program is meant for

The program is suitable for managers, executives and professionals aspiring for a career in the field of data analytics. Those with an undergraduate degree in any discipline can apply for the program. Since the topics will be covered through the MS-Excel tool, it helps if the participants have some basic skills in the spreadsheet program.

Following are the course fees for the different category of participants.
  1. Students and individual participants - INR 60,000 + 18% GST
  2. Corporates and sponsored candidates - INR 80,000 + 18% GST
  3. Overseas participants - USD 1200 (includes course materials)

How to register

Registration for the program is done on first-come-first-served basis. Applicants to visit the official website of the SQC & OR Division, Mumbai, Indian Statistical Institute. There they can access the program details and the brochure. Download the brochure and the nomination form. Fill up the nomination form and sent it to the Program Director at the Mumbai unit of ISI through email or by post. The course fee is to be paid either through Demand Draft/Cheque or through an online payment. The necessary details regarding payment of fees are given in the nomination form itself. Applicants to ensure their eligibility for the program and availability of seats before making online payments. Fees once paid are not refundable.
