How to crack the chemistry examinations effectively

Chemistry is one of the important subjects for the students who want to pursue their engineering or medical courses after 12th class. Many students will have a feeling that chemistry is a tough subject and try to avoid the subject till the last moment, but that will affect their performance. In this article, some important tips to fare well in the chemistry examination are discussed.

Introduction:

Chemistry is one of the important subjects which plays a vital role in our lives. Some basic knowledge in chemistry is very essential for the students who want to pursue either Engineering or Medicine. That is why for intermediate or class XII science students it is mandatory to study physical sciences as one of the subjects. They can choose one subject from mathematics and Biological sciences in addition to the physical sciences.

But many students are not comfortable with chemistry. They say they don't like that subject as they are not able to understand the subject well. They think that studying chemistry is an uphill task. As per them, it is a big challenge to study the subject. There is a general feeling that scoring marks in chemistry is tough But it is not true. It is not that difficult if good methods of studying the subject are adopted. Various points that will help the student in facing the examination in chemistry well are discussed in the following few lines,

Points to follow:

The following are some of the important points to follow to fare well in chemistry examinations-
  1. Start early: The majority of the present-day students are having the habit of studying the subject when the examinations are approaching. But it is not a good practice, especially for chemistry. This will not help them understand the subject well. The process of studying chemistry should be started well in advance. In fact, after coming back from school or college if you spend a little time revising the subject that was taught on that day and noting down the important point along with the doubts you have will help you in learning the subject and also remembering the subject well. This will help you in facing the exam too confidently. Once you do this, just reviewing the subject just 2 or 3 days before the examination will be sufficient to score well in the chemistry examination.

  2. Understand the basics well: Some of the concepts in this subject may be very difficult and they are some exceptions. It is better not to worry much about these points and need not waste time there as they are very minor. But understand the basics well and spend more time if necessary to understand the basics well.

  3. Practice more: Chemistry is one subject where there will be many problems that require mathematical calculations. The students should understand well if using a calculator and it should be carried to the examination if it is allowed. Generally, the problems that are solved in the books will appear as if it is very easy, but it is always advisable to solve some model problems. Practising to write each step instead of just getting the final answer is very much necessary. Practising more and more model problems will make the student more confident in solving them. Not only figures but also the units are also very important. So, enough concentration should be given to remember these units also.

  4. Eat and sleep well: Don't be anxious on the night before the examination. Be confident. Eat well and have sufficient sleep. This will make you stable and free from stress Studying a full night without sleeping properly will make you more confused. So having good sleep is very important.

  5. Carry items that are allowed. That will make you comfortable and need not remember many things but just can refer. A calculator may be allowed. Logarithmic tables book and a periodic table chart may also be allowed. Carrying them will be useful to refer to in case of any requirement.

Important points to be followed in the examination hall:

The following are some important points which will help the student to best utilise his/her time in the examination hall-
  1. Read the questions carefully. Sometimes questions may misguide you if you don't read the question completely. Also, read the instructions carefully. Understand the choices given. See whether there is any negative marking. Spending a little time on this will save a lot of time afterwards. There will be some important points like some constants, formulas and units which you have to use somewhere while answering the questions. They may be a few. As soon as you get into the examination hall and answer sheets are given note down them somewhere as the chances of forgetting them are high while answering other questions.

  2. Allocate the time equally and see that you will be progressing as per the allocated time. Sometimes we spend a lot of time initially on one or two questions and then we start getting hasty. To avoid that, time management is very important and you should make a time plan and adhere to that.

  3. Answer sheets should look neat. You should see that you write legibly. Sometimes you may not be able to answer the problem till the end. But start writing the answer, and it may take you to the end. Even stopping in between also may fetch you some marks instead of avoiding and leaving the questions unanswered.

  4. Sometimes you may not know the correct answer but you have a guess. If there is a negative marking you should not go for very wild guesses. If there is no system of negative marking try to give an answer instead of leaving it blank.

Conclusion:

Like any other subject, chemistry is also an interesting subject and one will enjoy the subject well if one is good at the basics. One should concentrate on the basics and understand them well. One should be confident and should not think that one can't do well. That positive feeling itself will make the student face the exam well.

Chemistry is one of the main subjects in science stream but many students have a wrong notion about it and feel that it is not as important as Physics or Biology or Mathematics. Actually the concepts and fundamentals of Chemistry are used in so many industries and so many manufacturing processes that we cannot produce so many chemicals, fertilizers, cosmetics, industrial chemicals, sprays etc without a good understanding and knowledge of this subject. The students should consider Chemistry as the building block for the industries and manufacturing segment and take interest in learning it. They should try to understand the basic principles of this important subject and should not just cram the formulas and equations. We have to note that we cannot understand the scientific principles properly if we do not learn from the basics. Learning science is a long time strategy and requires a dedicated approach to it.

Chemistry is an interesting subject providing the aspirants deep understanding as to how the reactions are involved to get an ultimate product. It is not that much easy unlike Physics and Mathematics which are guided with some basics and that will hold good in all the conditions not violating the basic principles.

However, in chemistry, reactions would proceed in different ways considering the concentration of the reactants, the temperature, pressure and other variables. For example Zinc will react with diluted Sulphuric Acid to form Hydrogen and Zinc Sulphate but in case of reaction with concentrated Sulphuric Acid, Sulphur Dioxide will form on applying heat outside the flask. That is how the ultimate product will vary with the variation of concentration of Sulphuric Acid. The subject becomes more interesting with the concept of the underlying principles.

Aspirants would do better in this subject if they have passion for this subject and are curious enough.

You are correct Sheo Shankar Jha. One should have a passion for the subject to become good at the subject. But how that passion will develop in a student. That will come by understanding the basics of the subjects and learning the subject with a proper understanding. One should read to understand the subject and then any doubts the student is having should get clarified by the teachers. That will make the individual get a liking towards the subject.

Thank you Dr Rao for your valuable feed back. The subject can be made more interesting with the sustained interest of the mentor. This would definitely go a long way to arouse their passion. Some may be interested in the subject right from the beginning but to some of the aspirants, the association of their colleagues or some professor in the class would create their interest for this subject later on. The way you have represented this article is quite remarkable.

Here are some points from my side-

Analyzing real world applications of the chemistry: While studying chemistry if the student try to relate the stuff what they are studying to real world applications it would be interesting and more engaging and also they can know the relevance of what they study in real world applications.

Using Flashcards: Students can use flashcards in their studies of chemistry like they can have the question on one side of the card and the answer on the other side of the card. Also they can write the important formulae in chemistry in flashcards and try to see that often to memorize them.

Writing important terms and formulae multiple times: Student can write down the important terms and chemistry formulae multiple times as it would help to memorize them easily. Also whenever we write we are creating a pictorial representation of that and it in turn tend to make it easier to remember.
