Easy recipe for hostel students

In this article, I will share an easy-to-make, one dish meal recipe that is bound to become your go-to food regardless of where you stay. However, you will appreciate it extra if you stay in a hostel/ PG/ Student flat. It takes only few minutes and ingredients that we use often in most of our dishes.

Introduction

Usually, when you think of study, you think of education, colleges, scores, tests and the like. Tell me, though, what do you need to study? Many things, but one essential need is food. Yes, you need that fuel to keep your brain running at high speed to keep up with those 25 hours of classes, coaching and assignments. Do not worry, I am well aware there are only 24 hours in a day, but you get the point! Food is essential to life no matter where in life you are, student or employed and every possible thing.

On that note, let me introduce to you my all-time favorite food. I understand if you are not interested in the description of my love for this food. You can just skip to the third paragraph!

I have several favorite foods depending on my mood at the time, but there are a couple of foods that I can eat at any time without complaining. One of them is tomato rice. Don't like something made at home? I can eat this. Don't like something ordered from outside? I can eat this! Come down with a fever? I can eat this! Not in the mood to eat anything but hungry? I can eat this. You get the idea; as I said, I can eat this food any time. To top this off, I can eat it for days together before the monotony of it sets in! It is not an exaggeration to say it is one of my comfort foods.

Besides its yummy and comforting taste, tomato rice is very easy to make and takes hardly 10 minutes. You can find the ingredients right in your kitchen at any given time because they are all very commonly used in our cuisine. Also, did I mention this is a one-dish meal? Now, tell me if this is not something you can make by yourself, away from your sweet home in your humble flat/ PG/ hostel as you toil up your way in life? Trust me, this will remind you of home, especially so if you have grown up on this! Now let us get down to the recipe.

Ingredients you will need

1. Tomatoes-medium 2 to 3-chop into small pieces. Make sure the tomatoes are ripe!
2. Green chilies-2 to 3-chop into pieces
3. Cumin seeds-a pinch or couple
4. Mustard seeds-a pinch or couple
5. Curry leaves-1 sprig or 8-10 leaves
6. Urad dal/ split black lentils-one teaspoonful
7. Oil-2 tablespoons
8. Salt-to taste

Cooking process

Step 1

Put a pan over medium flame, add oil and wait for it to heat up. There are several ways to tell when the oil is hot. I usually look for thin smoke emanating from the pan. Alternatively, you can add a few mustard seeds and if they pop, the oil is hot.

Step 2

Switch the burner to low flame. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal and green chillies. Temper them for about 3 seconds. Now add the curry leaves and temper for 2-3 more seconds.

Step 3

Add the chopped tomato pieces and salt to the tempered spices and sauté them for 5-7 minutes.

Step 4

Once the tomatoes wilt, add a cup or 100-150 grams of cooked rice. Turn and toss the rice to mix it with the mixture. Wait for 2 minutes before turning off the stove.

Your delicious tomato rice is all ready to go down a slide in your digestive tract! Please let me know in the comments how it turned out when you try out the recipe. Also, What is your comfort food?

Note

You can adjust the quantity of the ingredients as per your liking.

Rice is an item which can be made in various delicious dishes and one of them is tomato rice. Others are tamarind rice, coconut rice, curd rice etc. In southern part of our country, these dishes are more popular. I also write recipes and publish them in some sites.

These days we see many varieties of rice like this. The author has explained the making of Tomato rice very clearly. These days we see many videos on YouTube explaining the making methods of various types of eating items. We see many people making food in Kitchen seeing these videos.
Making rice and other dishes separately may require more time. But making a combination like this is comparatively easy and many people prefer the same. In our house, we make dal rice, curd rice and jeera rice etc sometimes. These items will come in handy when we undertake long journeys. It is easy to pack them and eat on the way instead of carrying them separately.

You have given a very good and simple recipe which is easy to cook in the hostel premises. We used to make maggie on an electrical stove. These used to give a change to the routine and monotonous food of hostel mess. Hope this recipe serves as a new dish for all the hostelers who are going to read this article.

Here's a simple recipe that hostel students can easily make:

One-Pot Pasta:

Ingredients:

1 pound spaghetti or any other pasta
4 cups water
1 can diced tomatoes
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
2 tablespoons olive oil
Optional: grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions:

In a large pot, combine the pasta, water, diced tomatoes (with the liquid), onion, garlic, salt, pepper, basil, oregano, and olive oil.
Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
Reduce heat to medium-high and continue cooking for 8-10 minutes, or until the pasta is cooked and the sauce has thickened.
Serve hot, optionally topped with grated Parmesan cheese.
This one-pot pasta recipe is quick, easy, and requires minimal effort and cleanup, making it perfect for busy hostel students. Enjoy!
