Predominantly set up to provide quality education to children in rural areas, the students get free education, including campus accommodation. Expenses for school uniforms and textbooks as also for other things like stationery are covered as well. Teachers impart the classroom lessons in the mother tongue or in the regional language where the JNV is located up to Class VIII. Students learn basic computer skills as well with the Computer:Student ratio of 1:8, and actively participate in sports competitions and co-curricular activities of NSS, NCC, etc. A JNV in a Hindi-speaking area may also arrange (as per arrangements available) for students of Class 9 to study for a year in another JNV in a non-Hindi-speaking region. This is facilitated under the unique migration scheme of NVS to encourage learning the culture of another region.
