How to get admissions to Rashtriya Military Schools for Class VI, Class IX

Overview of RSM
Rashtriya Military schools are premier residential CBSE-affiliated schools under the administration of the Directorate General of Military Training at IHQ of MOD (Army), under the aegis of the Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India. The list of the five RSMs is provided at the end of this article. Education is imparted in the English medium as per the CBSE syllabus, and the science stream is offered at the higher secondary level. Students can avail of means-cum-merit scholarships through a scholarship test. Students are also given preparatory guidance to appear for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam for admission to the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA).
The campus infrastructure includes spacious classrooms, a library, medical facilities, a mess with separate arrangements for vegetarians and non-vegetarians, etc. Sports facilities are provided for athletics, cricket, boxing, football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, and table tennis. Students can participate in interesting co-curricular activities like woodwork, dramatics, photography, etc. Scouting and trekking are scheduled from time to time, and NCC training is mandatory for all students.
Students are shortlisted for admission on the basis of a Common Entrance Test (CET). All students have to stay in the hostel accommodation on the campus of the school where admission is granted. Day scholars are strictly not permitted.
2023 Admission Alert: The administrative management of Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) has now announced applications open for admission to Class VI for boys and girls, and to Class IX for boys only for the academic year 2023-24. Parents are required to submit the applications and make the payment for the application fee in online mode only latest by 10th October 2022. Rashtriya Military School Fees
The school tuition fee has to be paid directly to the school at the time of admission, while the caution money should be deposited at the time of admission and will be refunded without interest once the student is discharged from the school. The fees are shown in the table below-

SC and ST candidates are required to pay one-fourth of the amount, and wards of service Officers/JCOs/NCOs who were killed in action do not have to pay the tuition fees or other fees. (the capitation fee and the caution money are not included). Also, parents must deposit a minimum of Rs. 10,000/- in the designated Pocket Money Account that will be used for expenses towards travel and monthly pocket money. It is mandatory to maintain a balance of Rs. 4,000/- at any one time in this pocket money account. Students are required to buy the required stationery and study books. Gender criterion: Both boys and girls can apply for admission to Class VI, but for Class IX only boys can apply.
Age criterion for 2023 admissions:
(i) For admission to Class VI: The child should not be less than 10 years and not more than 12 years of age as of 31st March 2023 (born between 1st April 2011 to 31st March 2013, both days inclusive). There is a relaxation of 6 months in the upper age limit wards of personnel Killed in Action.
(ii) For admission to Class IX: He should not be less than 13 years and not more than 15 years of age as of 31st March 2023 (born between 01 April 2008 to 31 March 2010, both days inclusive). There is a relaxation of 6 months in the upper age limit wards of personnel Killed in Action.
(iii) For Classes VI and IX: Admission is granted on the basis of the availability of seats.
Education Qualifications Criteria:
(i) For admission to Class VI: The student should have passed Class V or be studying in Class V and pass it before the date of admission to a Rashtriya Military School.
(ii) For admission to Class IX: The student should have passed Class VIII from a government/recognized school before the date of admission to a Rashtriya Military School. However, those who are studying in Class V and Class VIII are also eligible to appear in the respective Entrance Test.
Language skills: Students should have a sufficient understanding of English since the medium of instruction in the schools is English. Rashtriya Military Schools Application Procedure
Registration and applications should be done in online mode only with a valid email ID and mobile phone number which can be either of the student or of the parents, at https://www.iambusyonline.com/cet2022/
It is advisable to go through the instructions provided in the Rashtriya Military Schools prospectus before starting the online application procedure (the link to the prospectus appears on the next screen, once you click on 'proceed'). Only one application per student should be submitted, and the submission of more than one will result in a rejection of all the applications.
Documents should be scanned and uploaded as required, namely, a scanned copy of the photograph, and a scanned copy of the signature. The relevant details for making the online payment of the application fee should also be kept ready. The application fee should be paid online with a debit card or a credit card or through Net Banking/UPI. This payment can be made either right after submitting the application form, or later, but must be done before the closing date of applications.Rashtriya Military School CET Format
The Common Entrance Test (CET) for admissions for all students is a paper-based Optical Mark Reader (OMR) written test. The syllabus of the CET will be based on the Class V standard for Class VI admission, and on the Class VIII standard for Class IX admissions. Sample Rashtriya Military School CET questions and an OMR sheet have been provided in the official prospectus, The question paper will be available in English and Hindi for Class VI and only in English for Class IX. Students who successfully pass the CET will then appear for an interview at a Rashtriya Military school, and the marks of the interview will be added to the score of the written test to finalize the students eligible for admission.
There are 4 sections for the CET for Class VI admissions-
(i) English: 50 marks, min. 35% to pass.
(ii) Intelligence Test: 50 marks, min. 40% to pass.
(iii) Maths: 50 marks, min. 40% to pass.
(iv) General Knowledge and Current Affairs: 50 marks, min. 40% to pass.
(v) Interview: 20 marks.
There are 2 papers for the CET for Class IX admissions-
Paper- 1 subjects: English (50marks), Hindi (20marks), and Social Science (30marks).
Paper- 2 subjects: Maths (50marks), Science (50marks).
Both Paper-1 and Paper-2 have a maximum of 100 marks, and the student has to score at least 50% on each paper to qualify for admission.
Note- The merit list of successful candidates and the allotment of the Rashtriya Military School will be declared by the IHQ of MoD (Army), ADGAE/AE-2, and the final result will be available on the official website and on Army Intranet. students who are not successful will not receive any direct communication. Qualified candidates will be allotted a school purely on the basis of merit, medical fitness, vacancy available in school, and reservation norms. Medical fitness will be gauged as per a medical exam at a hospital that is authorized to conduct the medical test. Parents should check the list of Command/Zonal and other Hospitals that has been provided in the prospectus, and mention the hospital code in the application form. No change in the medical exam centre will be allowed.Key dates

Parents should directly inform the Principal of the Rashtriya Military School which has been allotted for their ward, of the date and time of arrival for admission. No communications should be sent by the parents to the IHQ of MoD (Army). It is best for both parents to be present at the time of admission. Note that the school will not arrange for boarding and lodging of the parents/those escorting the student to the school. In case the student is unwilling to join the allotted school, parents should fill in the required slip that is available in the prospectus so that the vacant seat can then be made available to another student.

Important notes: The school-leaving certificate obtained from the previous school of the candidate should be countersigned by the District Education Officer. A certificate that has been issued by the Gram Panchayat or any other local body will be rejected.
