What is the Midday Meal Scheme?

Midday Meal Scheme is an existing scheme that is providing lunch for school students of government as well as government-aided schools in Tamil Nadu. This scheme has been in effect since 1955 during the reign of the former Chief Minister of Madras state, Mr. K. Kamaraj.

This scheme has been forced into effect to motivate several students who belong to poor families. During that time, most of the children seem to graze their cattle. Upon seeing such an incident, the Chief Minister Mr. K. Kamaraj asked the little boy why he is not going to school and grazing cattle.

The boy replied to the CM "If I go to school, who is going to feed me and my family". After this reply, the CM silently went on his way and immediately convened a meeting to take over this matter to resolve the issue of poverty. Finally, he took the decision that government should feed school students to get rid of such interruptions in their studies.

Chief Minister's Breakfast Program

Now, the present Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. M.K. Stalin has brought this scheme. This scheme helps to promote the education of poor students studying in Tamil Nadu government schools. The statement issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu indicates that this scheme is announced by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu under Tamil Nadu Legislative Council Rule No. 110 to help poor school students as well as to overcome malnutrition issues and to avoid dropping out of school students.

Initially, the scheme is going to be implemented in some Municipalities, Corporations, and remote villages. The students studying from 1st to 5th standard in government primary schools will be provided with nutritious snacks in the morning on all school working days.

In order to effectively implement the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme, the project implementation guidelines and survey forms for inspection of integrated kitchens preparing food in urban areas, schools attached to them and schools/kitchens operating in rural and hilly areas under the scheme have been published in the interview letter.

Best motivation to the school students

What do you think about this scheme in Tamil Nadu? The government is actively contributing its effort toward the development of the education system and the improvement of school students.

Not only this, but the government is also continuously supporting its poor citizen through another scheme named "AMMA UNAVAGAM". It is a food subsidization program maintained and run by the Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies, Government of Tamil Nadu. Not only students, but all people with no age limits can also approach here. "AMMA UNAVAGAM" provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner at very lower costs. It helps people going to work as well as students who have low-budget for their daily essential needs.

Conclusion

We should support and recognize this kind of scheme. Is there any scheme like this helping school students in your state? Share your thoughts and opinion about this scheme in the comment box below.

These schemes may be good for motivating the students to come to school but not to create interest in the students about education. In many states, the midday meals program is already under implementation. There is a meaning in providing midday meals as students can't go home for having lunch. But what is the necessity for providing breakfast? They will be coming from home only and they have their breakfast and come. Already many state governments are providing free books, free uniforms, free bags etc in addition to midday meals. All these schemes are making the school teachers busy with administration work but not education. Instead of providing these freebies to the poor, they can offer scholarships to poor students who are showing interest in studies and getting good marks. That will help the teachers also to concentrate more on teaching rather than concentrating on food supply etc. In a rural atmosphere, everything will become a political issue and local leaders try to create disputes and disturb teachers.

In our country there is a mad race for providing food aids to the poor and to the students or to the downtrodden people in the society. It is a good gesture but it doesn't fit in the long term planning of the development of a country. Today a state is giving food to its students, tomorrow another state will go for it and slowly all the states will be doing it and following it blindly.
There is no end to these free food packets. Every new Govt will be distributing more free food to the poor people.
What I feel is that it is a myopic view of the whole situation. What we have to do is to provide good education to our children and create a large number of jobs in our states so that these children can take up jobs and look after themselves and their family once they grow up to the age. Once they are spoiled with the free food program, they will not yearn for struggle and hard work in their lives. These types of free food programs are not in a good taste. Many political parties are giving it a preference but it is not what we have to do for the progress of the country.
