The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is the largest Open Schooling system in the world and is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India. NIOS has now announced admissions open for the academic session 2022-23 for secondary, senior secondary, and vocational courses. The minimum age limit is 14 years for Class 10, and 15 years for Class 12. There is no upper age limit.

Students learn academic and vocational subjects in multiple languages through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode of NIOS at their own pace from wherever they are based. There is a choice of subject combinations, and you can even combine an academic subject with a vocational one. The fee structure is pocket-friendly, with relevant study material delivered through postal mail with no additional fee for this delivery. Digital support is provided through the SWAYAM platform at swayam.gov.in/NIOS. Audio-video programs and live lectures are scheduled on Mukta Vidya Vani, the Web Radio that can be accessed through the NIOS website. There are also TV channels, namely e-Vidya 10 for secondary students, and e-Vidya 12 for senior secondary students). Support is provided via email and a Toll-free number, and study centres. Totally there are 7,902 Study Centres, with 23 main regional centres, two sub-regional centres, and two NIOS Cells.
Some prominent features of NIOS programs include a flexible exam system, On Demand Exams (ODE), Personal Contact Programs (PCPs), Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMA), a credit accumulation facility for five years, etc.
As you can see from the aforementioned information, studying through NIOS is a boon for school dropouts and those who cannot afford high school fees. The NIOS programs are also beneficial for Indian Army personnel to complete Class 10 and 12 through NIOS.NIOS programs
Open Basic Programs These programs are for children age six to 14 years, as also for adults. There are three levels, namely Level-A (equivalent to Class 3), Level-B (equivalent to Class 5), and Level-C (equivalent to Class 8).
Secondary and Senior Secondary Programs At the Secondary level there are 37 subjects, including 19 languages. At the Senior Secondary level, there are 42 subjects, including 13 languages.
Vocational Programs There are currently 104 courses in the broad areas of-Eligibility requirements
For the Secondary Course (Class 10): Passed class VIII and a valid proof of attaining 14 years of age as of 31st January of the current year. There is no upper age limit. If you have already studied at the secondary level, then also you can apply for admission to NIOS either to complete the course or to improve your performance.
For the Senior Secondary Course (Class 12): Passed the Secondary course from a recognized Board with a minimum age of 15 years as of 31st January of the current year. There is no upper age limit.
Important note: It is essential to have a valid proof of date of birth, namely, the certificate of date of birth issued by any Govt.-authorized body, such as the Municipal Corporation, the Village Panchayat, etc that is authorized by the Registrar, Birth, and Death, Govt. of India. An Aadhaar Card issued by a Govt. agency is also a valid proof of date of birth. In the case of orphans, street children, etc., a medical certificate in respect of age issued by a Government Hospital will be accepted as valid proof of date of birth.How to apply for NIOS admissions
Hassle-free online admission can be done through the admission link at the NIOS official website or through the Student Portal of NIOS and also through the NIOS App. Please go through the instructions carefully before starting the online application. You are required to select your choice of subjects and a Study Center during the online application process (refer to the resources at the end of the article).
Before starting, keep ready scanned images of requisite documents for the online registration process. These include a recent passport-size color photo, your signature (preferably in black ink), valid Identity and residence proof, proof of date of birth, and academic mark sheets, as also other relevant documents as applicable.
Which documents are acceptable-
ID document: For identity proof, any one of these is acceptable- Aadhaar Number, Aadhaar Enrolment number, Passport number, Ration Card number, Bank Account number, or any other valid government Identity Card.
Residence document: For documentary proof of residence, you can submit any of these - Ration Card or Aadhar Card or an appointment letter from the Employer on the official Letter Head or any Utility Bill (such as telephone, electricity, etc) or Statement of running Bank Account or Income Tax Assessment Order or Voter Identity Card. In case you are currently staying in temporary rental premises, then you need to submit a copy of proof of your permanent address along with the present Rent Agreement. For a student who is a minor, a parent's passport is acceptable.
Date of proof document: For students taking admission for a Secondary Course, it can be any of these- birth certificate or passport or Transfer Certificate/School Leaving Certificate or Aadhaar Card with the date of birth clearly printed on it.
Academic documents: Class 8th mark sheet or Self Certificate for admission to a secondary course and Class 10th mark sheet/Certificate for admission to a Senior Secondary Course. Also required is the original scanned copy of the failed mark sheet that has been issued by the Parent Board of the School Education in case the registration is for Stream- 2, 3, or 4.
Caste certificates: A self-attested true copy of Social Category/SC, ST, or OBC Caste Certificate if the student is applying through any of these categories.
Other documents if applicable: Ex-serviceman Certificate, and Disability Certificate.NIOS Fees
After submitting the online application, the payment of the fee should also be done online. While this fee can be paid later and not necessarily on the same day as applying, it should be paid within 10 days of submitting the online application and within 5 days if you submit the online application towards the closing date for a particular Block of admission. After the payment is done, no changes can be made to the online application form.
The NIOS application form fee is Rs.50/- for all the Streams. This fee can be paid online through a credit card or debit card or through Net Banking. If the admission is done through a Common Services Centre (CSC), the fee can be paid via the Electronic Wallet of the CSC.
