The goal: The merit scholarships available under this scheme, known as the Single Girl Child Scholarship X (SGCS-X) is for a student who is a single girl child, which means that it is for a girl student who is the only child of her parents and has no siblings. This unique scholarship scheme is a way to acknowledge and appreciate parents who are making the effort to educate their daughters, at the same time encouraging deserving students.

An additional note here- As per an official approval of 2012 by the relevant authorities, children born together are also considered as Single Girl Child of their parents.

The number: Every year this scholarship is given on the basis of the eligible applications received and hence there is no fixed number of scholarships.

The amount and mode: The scholarship is fixed at Rs. 500/- per month, to be paid for a maximum of two years. The scholarship amount will be credited through ECS/NEFT.

Eligibility requirements

A merit list is prepared on the basis of the scores in the Class X CBSE exam, with the following eligibility criteria to be fulfilled by those applying for the scholarship-
  1. The single girl student should be an Indian national.

  2. The student should have scored a minimum of 60% marks or more in the Class X exam, conducted by CBSE.

  3. The student should be a student in Class XI or Class XII in a CBSE-affiliated school where the tuition fee does not exceed Rs. 1,500/- p.m. during the academic year.

  4. In the subsequent two years of studies, the tuition fee should not increase to more than 10% of the tuition fee charged.

  5. An NRI applicant of the CBSE Board is also eligible to apply for the scholarship, but the maximum tuition fee for her has been fixed at Rs. 6,000/- per month.

Scholarship duration and Renewal

The scholarship that has been awarded to the girl child can be renewed for the next year, as well, that is, on successfully completing Class XI. However, it is essential to secure an aggregate of 50% or more in the qualifying exam that promotes her to the next class. Note that she should have received the CBSE Single Girl Child Merit Scholarship last year to be eligible to apply for renewal. In case she decides to opt out of the course that she is studying in and switches the course of study or if she leaves the school to study in another school, then the renewal/continuation of the school will be subject to the prior approval of CBSE. It is also imperative that the student maintains a good attendance record, is disciplined, and shows good behavior for the scholarship to be continued. Once the CBSE takes the decision to cancel the scholarship, it will not be reviewed again.

The requirement of the maximum permitted tuition fee is the same as when applying in the earlier year, namely, that the Class X tuition fee should not exceed Rs. 1,500/- per month during the academic year, and in the subsequent two years the total enhancement of tuition fee shall not be more than 10% of the tuition fee.

CBSE Single Girl Child Scholarship Application Procedure
