About university

Banaras Hindu University is a central university which is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was established in 1916. Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi has released an official notification for admission to Ph.D. programs in various disciplines. Eligible candidates can still apply for Ph.D./ Vidyavaridhi program and register themselves on the website of BHU.

Department-wise Eligibility criteria

Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science

Eligibility criteria: Master's degree in the concerned subject OR Masters's degree in any one of the allied subjects.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Faculty of Performing Arts

Eligibility criteria: Master's degree in the concerned discipline from a recognized University or master's degree in any discipline and have passed any one of the following examinations other than Performing Arts: Sangeet Nipun Examination of Bhatkhande Vidyapeeth, Lucknow; (b) Sangeet Praveen Examination of Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad; (c) Sangeet Alankar Examination of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Mumbai; (d) Sangeet Kovid Examination of Indra Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, C.G. or Any other Professional Music Degree equivalent to the above and recognized by the Banaras Hindu University.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Sanskrit Vidya Dharm Vigyan Sankay

Eligibility criteria: Acharya degree in the concerned subject OR Acharya or equivalent degree in any one of the allied subjects.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Faculty of Commerce

Eligibility criteria: Master's degree in Commerce (M.Com.)/Master of Finance and Control (M.F.C.)/ Master of Financial Management (MFM) / Master of Risk and Insurance Management (MRIM)/ Master of Financial Management Risk & Insurance) (MFMRI)/Master of Foreign Trade (MFT)/Master of Business Management (M.B.M.), Master of Business Administration or in allied areas namely, M.A. in Economics/ Psychology, Chartered Accountancy (C.A.) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Costs & Works Accountancy of the Institute of Costs & Works Accountants of India (I.C.W.A.I.), the Company Secretaryship of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (I.C.S.I.).
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Faculty of Management Studies

Eligibility criteria: Master's degree in Business Management (M.B.M.), Management Studies/ Management
Sciences (M.M.S.), Business Administration (M.B.A.), International Business Administration (M.I.B.A.), International Business (M.I.B.), M.B.A. (Agri-Business) OR two-year PGP/PGDM declared equivalent to Master's Degree in Management by AIU/accredited by AICTE/UGC or First class graduate and professionally qualified Chartered Accountant/Cost and Works Accountant/Company Secretary of the concerned statutory bodies.
Qualifying Marks: At least 60% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Faculty of Law

Eligibility criteria: Master's Degree in the concerned discipline.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in the aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Faculty of Education

Eligibility Criteria: M.Ed./M.A. (Education)/ Master's degree in Special Education [M.Ed. (Spl.)] OR Master's degree in any one of the allied subjects (Indian Philosophy and Religion, Philosophy, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Faculty of Medicine

Eligibility criteria: Master's degree in the concerned subject or Master's Degree degree in any one of the allied subjects. However, Magister Chirurgiae (M.Ch.)/ Diplomate of National Board (D.N.B) is the concerned subject recognized by the Medical Council of India. Or M.Sc. in the concerned subject OR Master's degree in any one of the allied subjects.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination (wherever the marks/grades are awarded). For admission to Ph.D. in CEMS a candidate(s) holding PG Degree in Biochemistry (Science/Medicine), Biotechnology, Botany, Molecular Human Genetics, Zoology, or Applied Microbiology.

Faculty of Ayurveda

Eligibility criteria: M.D.(Ay.)/ M.S.(Ay.) recognized by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM). Or a Master's degree in any one of the allied subjects.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Faculty of Dental Sciences

Eligibility criteria: Master's Degree in Dental Surgery or Master's degree in any one of the allied subjects.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination
(wherever the marks/grades are awarded)

Faculty of Visual Arts

Eligibility criteria: Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts under a four-year course and Master's degree in Fine Arts: MFA in applied Art OR MFA in Plastic Arts (Sculpture) OR MFA in Painting OR textile Design OR MFA in Pottery Ceramic.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Faculty of environment Sustainable Development

Eligibility criteria: A candidate having a Master's degree in the concerned subject OR master's degree in any one of the allied subjects, namely, Agriculture (all disciplines), Chemistry/Applied Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, Microbiology/Applied Microbiology, Physics/Applied Physics, Biochemistry, Bio-informatics, Biotechnology, Botany, Earth Sciences, Ecological Sciences, M.Tech. in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology, Environmental Management, Environmental Microbiology, M.Sc. in Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Life Science/Biosciences, Meteorology, Wildlife Biology, Zoology, Statistics, Remote Sensing & GIS/Geoinformatics provided the candidate has opted for at least one paper related to environment and/or sustainable development.
Qualifying Marks: At least 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade point average in the qualifying examination.

Reservation of Seats

There will be a 15% reservation in seats for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 27% for non-creamy layer OBC candidates. Apart from this, 10% of seats are reserved for EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates and 5% for Persons with Disability (PwD) candidates. The candidates who wish to get the reservation category benefit must apply under this category and should produce a relevant category certificate at the time of the interview.

How to Apply

The online applications are available on the entrance test portal of BHU. Desirous candidates must visit the official website of BHU . The candidates fulfilling the eligibility criteria may register official website of BHU. The online application submission process includes registration as the first step. Eligible candidates must register themselves by submitting their details like name, date of birth, email id, and mobile id. After successful registration, the candidates will receive a user id and password. Using those credentials the candidates can log in and fill out the application form, upload the necessary documents and pay the application form fee through the online payment gateway. After the successful submission of the online application form for various courses, the candidates can download the filled-in application form.

  • Application Fee

    An application fee is to be paid by the candidate. The application fee is non-refundable. Fees can be paid through a payment gateway, using a Credit Card /Debit Card/Online/ Online Banking. Fee details are as follows:
    For the general category candidates: Rs.800/-
    For reserved category (SC/ST/PwD) candidates: Rs. 400/-

    Selection procedure

    Selection of the students for the Ph.D. program will be done based on performance in the written test and interviews. Apart from this, academic records, qualifications, and candidates' research interests as per available research areas will also be taken into consideration at the time of selection of suitable candidates. Thus, a thorough evaluation process will be followed for the final selection of the candidates.
