Initially, this institute was called the Institute of Armament Technology (IAT). Only defence personnel were allowed to join and study here by applying for study leave under the qualification improvement programme. The institute was providing knowledge to the defence personnel that will be helpful for their career development. They were inviting various industry professionals to give lectures to the defence staff. Later on, it was given the deemed university status and general candidates were also allowed to join the institute. Today the institute is having two wings. One is exclusively for training the service personnel. The other one is for all, defence personnel as well as others.
The specialty of this institute is the seminars and workshops that are conducted by senior scientists from various Defence R & D laboratories. These will help the students to interact with senior scientists and to get clarifications from them.
I am fortunate to have had some association with this university. I was a Board of Studies member in the applied chemistry department of this institute and I have participated as a resource person in some QIP programs and seminars.
