Overview

In the 2022-23 Global 2022 ranking list of the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata has been ranked #1560 in the world ranking list, and #42 in the national ranking, with an Education Rank of 211. The Kolkata institute's reputation has grown exponentially over the years, and it continues to be the most well-known and sought-after institute for studying Statistics and Maths in India. The 30-acre campus has excellent infrastructure for every department, and a separate administration building and hostel accommodation for students enrolling in some of the programs. The library building spread over five floors has gained national importance for its extensive repository of books, journals, magazines, newspapers, etc as also computerized and technological facilities. . Internship opportunities are available in a variety of domains, such as data science, banking, and finance, software engineering, etc. Placement services are good, too, with previous recruiters including prestigious companies like Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Dell, etc.

ISI-Cal Degree programs

Bachelor of Statistics (Honours)

The three-year B. Stat. (Hons.) course is an undergraduate program of six semesters with lectures on weekdays only (unless some requirement comes up for additional academic sessions). There is a semester-end exam, prior to which you will get two weeks to study for it. The course covers all aspects of Statistics, both theoretical and practical, and there are modules related to allied aspects of maths and computer science. On completing the course, you can apply for admission to the M. Stat. program in the same institute.
There are two groups of Electives in this program. In the Elective-I group, you have to select any one of these- (1) Physics I (2) Microeconomics (3) Molecular Biology (4) Geology, or (5) Introduction to Sociology. Similarly, in the Elective-II group, you have to select any one of these- (1) Physics II (2) Macroeconomics (3) Agricultural Science (4) Introduction to Anthropology, or (5) Psychology. Also, in Semester VI, you can choose one of these optional courses- (1) Random Graphs (2) Number Theory (3) Special topics on Algorithms (4) Statistical Methods in Genetics (5) Quantum Physics (note that not all these may be offered).

Eligibility: You should have completed 10+2 or an equivalent with Maths and English as subjects.

Program Fee: You only have to pay the library deposit fee (refundable), and, if availing of campus accommodation, a hostel deposit fee (also refundable). You will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 3000 at the time of admission for the first semester. It will be continued for every subsequent semester on the basis of your academic performance, conduct, and attendance record.

Master of Statistics

The M. Stat. program is a two-year program of four semesters, with students of the B.Stat. program enrolled in B–stream, and other streams in NB-stream for the first year, and then the two streams are merged in the next year. In addition to compulsory and elective courses, you can also opt for a unique 8-day short-term, non-credit course between the first and the second semesters, on the theme 'National and International Statistical System'. This is offered in collaboration with the National Statistical Systems Training Academy (NSSTA), New Delhi. In the second year, you can even choose to do a dissertation for one year under the supervision of a permanent faculty member of ISC-Cal, but you are required to fulfill the required eligibility criteria (refer to the official brochure for further details) to take this up. You will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 8000/- for the first semester, upon getting admission to this program.

Eligibility: You should have a Bachelor's degree of three or more years' duration in any discipline.

Master of Mathematics

The M.Math. program is a two-year program that offers in-depth knowledge and training in Mathematics. In each week, you will attend three lecture sessions and one practical/tutorial session. There are plenty of Elective courses to choose from, though all those that are mentioned in the brochure currently may not be offered in the semester, as it depends on the resources and requirements of other programs as well. You can take up a maximum of two projects during the second year, with not more than one in a single semester. The project must be in Maths or in a related area that has sufficient Maths content. The eligibility for taking up a project is mentioned in the official brochure. You will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 8000/- for the first semester, upon getting admission to this program.

Eligibility: You must have a Bachelor's degree of three or more years' duration in any discipline.

Master of Science in Quantitative Economics

The MS (QE) program is a two-year program of an advanced level, providing knowledge and training in theoretical and practical applications of Economics with a focus on quantitative methods. Compulsory courses include Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometric Methods, Statistics, Mathematical Methods, and Game Theory-I. Optional courses are more than 20, including topics like social accounting, regional economics, public economics, law and economics, labour economics, environmental economics, corporate finance, etc. You have the option to take up a project in the third semester, and a thesis in the fourth semester of the program. You will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 8000/- for the first semester, upon getting admission to this program.

Eligibility: must have a Bachelor's degree of three or more years' duration, in any discipline.

Master of Technology in Computer Science

The M.Tech. (CS) program is a two-year theoretical-cum-professional program in Computer Science and Technology. Based on their performance in the entrance test/GATE score, students are categorized either as CS-stream students or as non-CS-stream students. A student is eligible for a monthly stipend in the first semester on registering for a minimum of four courses, and in the subsequent semesters on the basis of scores obtained. You need not worry about getting confused about which courses to opt for. There is a Mentor Committee that will provide the necessary guidance on selecting the courses, as also for any other issues. You must, though, submit your choice of courses within two weeks from the start of the semester. You will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 12400/- per month.

The program comprises compulsory courses related to programming and algorithms; formative courses related to algebra, programming languages, data structure, operating systems, etc; and elective courses which are classified into four, namely, Theory, Systems, Cryptology and Security, and Data Science. The courses specifically for CS-stream and those for non-CS-stream are listed in the official brochure. Toward the beginning of the third semester, you have to complete a dissertation that is assigned/approved by the Project and Dissertation Committee under the supervision of a faculty member. You can also take up a minor project in either the third or the fourth semester, provided the required eligibility criteria are fulfilled. Between the end of the second semester and the start of the third semester, there is a gap of 12 weeks, when you can take up an internship or industrial training outside the institute in research institutes or public/private sector organizations in India or abroad. However, this is not mandatory.

Eligibility: You should have a four-year B.E. or a B.Tech. or equivalent degree in any stream; or a Master's degree in any subject and have passed Maths at the 10+2 level.

Master of Technology in Cryptology and Security

The M Tech (CrS) program is a two-year program that covers the theoretical and practical aspects of cryptology and information security, incorporating modules in the fields of mathematics, statistics and computer science. In the first semester, you have to take up Discrete Mathematics, and Computing Systems I (OS & Architecture) courses, and select any three of these four courses on the basis of your academic/professional background and as advised by a faculty member- Algebra and Number Theory; Probability and Statistics; Automata Theory, Languages and Computation; and Computing Lab (Programming and Data Structures. There are five courses in the second semester, three courses and two electives in the third semester, and a dissertation in the fourth semester. You will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 12400/- per month.

Eligibility: You should have a four-year B.E. or B.Tech. or equivalent degree in any stream; or a Master's degree in any subject and have passed Maths at the 10+2 level.

Master of Technology in Quality, Reliability & Operations Research

This M.Tech. (QROR) program is of two years duration, covering aspects of quality management systems, statistical quality control, etc. In addition to lectures, you will be working on case studies, and a dissertation or project work under the expert guidance of a faculty member. There is a summer internship of 10 weeks that begins right after the second semester exam and will be carried forward in the fourth semester. Electives are offered in the third semester. You will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 12400/- per month. You have to pay a deposit of Rs.1,000/ as caution money for use of equipment and facilities in the department (this is a refundable deposit).

As per the eligibility mentioned below, the program is offered in two streams- the Statistics stream is for candidates with the qualifications (1) or (2) that are mentioned below, and the Engineering stream is for candidates with an undergraduate degree in Engineering or Technology as in (3) mentioned below.
Eligibility: You must have (1) a Master's Degree in Statistics with Physics and Chemistry at the 10+2 level; or (ii) a Master's Degree in Maths with Statistics as a subject at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, and Physics and Chemistry at the 10+2 level; or (3) a B.E. or a B.Tech. degree or any other qualification considered equivalent (such as AMIE).



ISI-Cal Diploma programs

Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics

The PGDBA is an inter-disciplinary full-time residential program for the duration of two years. Faculty of ISI-Cal, as well as those of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Calcutta, will be teaching the course modules as the program is a joint collaboration between them. You will acquire relevant business analytical skills not just through their lectures, but also through actual training sessions with companies in the sector and interacting with professionals in the field.

Eligibility: You should be a graduate or postgraduate with a B.Tech./B.E./M.Sc./M.Com. or equivalent with 10 + 2 + 4 or 10 + 2 + 5 or 10 + 2 + 3 + 2, with min. 60% marks or CGPA of 6.5 in the qualifying degree exam. Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Statistics

The PGDAS is an online paid program offered by Coursera. There are two semesters with learning modules that combine economics and statistics. The course initially offers an understanding of the basic fundamentals of data collection, and then delves deeper into how to analyze data with the help of statistical data analysis tools thereby equipping you with computing skills as well. Eventually, you will be successful in creating, developing, and interpreting data that would be useful for a company or a government organization to take informed decisions on their policies.

In addition to online lectures, there will be interactive sessions, participation in quizzes, and working on assignments. The program breakup is as follows-
Semester 1 - Week 1 to Week 24: 6 mandatory courses.
Semester 2: You have to select one of the specializations from Official Statistics and Data Analytics. The final exam of the program will be scheduled in the last two weeks.

Eligibility: You should have an undergraduate degree in any subject from a recognized university in India or abroad, along with basic knowledge of high school-level mathematics.

Program fee: Rs. 450,000/- for Indian students; USD 6,000 for international students.

ISI-Cal Research Programs

You can take up research in any of the below-mentioned fields to pursue a Ph.D. program provided that you fulfill the eligibility criteria-

    Eligibility: You should have an M.Stat. or M.Math. degree from ISI; or an M.A. or M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Statistics.

  2. Mathematics
    Eligibility: You should have an M.Stat. or M.Math degree from ISI; or an an M.A. or M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Maths; or an M.E./M.Tech. degree or equivalent with Maths as a subject.

  3. Quantitative Economics
    Eligibility: You should have a Master's degree in any discipline with Economics/Math/Statistics as a subject at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.

  4. Computer Science (CS)
    Eligibility: You should have an M.E./M.Tech. or equivalent Master's degree in Electronics/Telecommunication/ Radio Physics/ Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Microwave Communications/ Information Technology/Bioinformatics/ Biotechnology with Maths as a subject at the undergraduate or postgraduate level; or an M.Stat./M.Sc./MCA/M.A. or equivalent Master's degree in Physics/Maths/Applied Maths/Statistics/Electronic Sciences/Computer Science/Atmospheric Science/Information Technology/Bioinformatics/Biotechnology with Maths as a subject at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.

  5. Quality, Reliability & Operations Research (QROR)
    Eligibility: You should have an M.Tech./ME/MS/M Phil or equivalent degree in Quality/Reliability/ Operations Research; or an M Stat/MSc/MA or equivalent degree in Maths/ Statistics/Physics with Maths as a subject at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.

ISI Kolkata Admissions Application Procedure

You have to submit your application online only at https://www.isical.ac.in/~admission/

Overseas students are also required to apply online at the same portal and must appear for the admission test at a test centre in India only. Also, such applicants must share their Application ID through an email to dean@isical.ac.in with the subject line 'Overseas Application for Admission 2023-24'

Ensure that you first read the official prospectus of the academic year that you are seeking admission, and fulfill all the eligibility requirements. Some programs will have a requirement of completing prerequisite courses. Read the instructions, and submit the documents that are required. You will be required to appear for an Admission Test, and in some cases, an interview as well.

The fee to apply for all academic programs is the same-
For male applicants in the unreserved (General) category: Rs.1500/-.
For female applicants in the unreserved (General) category: Rs. 1000/-.
