COMEDK UG Entrance Test - Gateway to engineering colleges in Karnataka

Are you aspiring for admission to one of the private engineering colleges in the Indian state of Karnataka? Find out about the COMEDK Under Graduate Entrance Test, which is the gateway to more than 150 engineering colleges in Karnataka.

About COMEDK

COMEDK is an autonomous institution in Karnataka that stands for the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka. The primary purpose of setting up this institution, which consists of senior academicians and administrators, was to devise a suitable testing procedure for admission of aspiring students to various dental, medical and engineering colleges in Karnataka. However, after NEET became mandatory everywhere in the country for medical and dental admissions, the COMEDK now conducts an entrance exam for engineering admissions only. It also facilitates admissions to architectural colleges but architectural aspirants need not appear for the engineering entrance test. Instead, they should have qualified in the National Aptitude Test for Architecture or its equivalent test. As of now, admission to 20,000 seats in around 150 engineering colleges in Karnataka is through COMEDK. Candidates qualifying in the entrance test are called for online counselling.

About the test

The COMEDK UGET is an online computer-based test (CBT), which is conducted across 400 centres in the country. For 2023 admissions the exam will be held on 28 May 2023 (Sunday). There will be only two sessions for the test, conducted on the same day one after the other. The candidates will get to know from their Test Admission Ticket (TAT) which session to appear in. The test is not limited to just Karnataka students. As long as one fulfils the eligibility criteria, anyone from across the country can appear for this entrance test and seek admission to one of the participating colleges under COMEDK. The eligibility criteria for appearing for the test are given below.

Eligibility criteria

  1. Second PUC Karnataka State Board or 10+2 qualification from any state or central government institution with physics, chemistry, and math with English as a compulsory subject in the last two years of study.

  2. Minimum 45% marks in aggregate in 10+2 for General candidates. For SC, ST and OBC candidates of Karnataka, the minimum requirement is 40%. Physics and math are compulsory and the optional subject could be either chemistry, biology, biotechnology, electronics or computer science.

Only those appearing for the COMEDK test will figure in the rank list. Since there are no lateral admissions to the second year, diploma candidates are not eligible for taking the COMEDK UGET exam.

Seat reservations

Even though the applicants are required to fill up their caste categories, whether General, ST, SC or OBC, there is no reservation of seats as such except for the 'local persons' belonging to Kalyana Karnataka (HK region). This is as per a government order of the Karnataka state. However, for eligibility, the norms are different for different categories. For General candidates, the minimum mark is 45%, whereas, for the rest of the categories, it is 40%. As such, candidates need to be careful while filling up the category status. Categories once mentioned in the application form cannot be changed later. All such candidates claiming relaxation in eligibility norms should be in possession of their category certificates at the time of counselling.

List of participating institutes

Around 150 engineering colleges are participating in the COMEDK UGET-2023. The list of the colleges and the courses being offered are available on the COMEDK website.

Test pattern

The test will be computer-based multiple choice (MCQ) type. It will be in the English language only. There will be a total of 180 questions with 60 each for physics, chemistry and mathematics. The total mark is 180 and each correct answer fetches 1 mark. There is no negative mark for wrong answers. The morning session of the exam is from 9 am to 12 pm and the afternoon session is from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The merit list will be formed based on the percentile score. In case of any tie in the total percentile between two or more candidates, the tie will be resolved as follows in the given order-
  1. The percentile score of physics and mathematics taken together
  2. Percentile score mathematics
  3. Percentile score chemistry
  4. Higher the age, higher the rank
