The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore has opened admissions for the academic year 2023 to its Bachelor of Science (Research) Program. This is a four-year course that allows a student to take up a specialization in a specific science subject alongside immersing into the curriculum of humanities and social sciences and graduating with a BS Research Degree. A unique feature of the BS research program is that, in addition to regular academic lectures by highly qualified faculty, postgraduate students of the institute play the role of mentors under the supervision of faculty, during the tutorial sessions, and also assist in conducting lab sessions.
The IISc Bangalore campus has separate hostel accommodations for boys and girls with mess facilities, recreational and sports facilities, a gym, a canteen, a health centre, auditoriums and lecture halls, computer labs, and a vast library. The Supercomputer Education and Research Centre (SERC) offers excellent technological facilities with the latest hardware and software for research-oriented purposes. The institute has a Placement Centre to guide students in getting placement in reputed organizations and provides quick notifications of job openings obtained through recruitment advertisements or direct requests from the industry.
About the IISc BS (Research) Program
Duration: Four years, divided into eight semesters.
Disciplines: There are six disciplines offered in the Bachelor of Science (Research) Program, namely-
You have to select any one of the above disciplines, with each having core and elective courses. In order to ensure that you get a wider perspective, you will also be taking up courses in engineering, humanities, etc. In the event you take up a sufficient number of designated courses in a discipline other than the major, you will also qualify for a "minor" in that discipline, and the complete combination of courses will be mentioned in the final transcript upon completing the entire program.
In the first three semesters, the learning modules will cover the three science subjects of physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as maths, engineering, and the humanities. Lab work and experiments will be important components. When the fourth semester begins, you will be pursuing one of these specializations- (1) Biology (2) Chemistry (3) Earth & Environmental Science (4) Materials (5) Mathematics (6) Physics . A specialization will be assigned to you on the basis of your interest as well as your academic performance in the earlier three semesters. As mentioned earlier, you can also select a "minor" discipline. Basically, overall you will be taking up 4 courses in the chosen major and minor disciplines, and, additionally, one elective course in engineering and one seminar course in the humanities.
Semester 7 will include a research project alongside elective courses, while in the last semester (semester 8) you will focus totally on that project. Course fees and Scholarships
The annual Tuition Fee is Rs.10000/-. Other fees are-
A Statutory Deposit to be paid in the first year only (this is refundable): Rs. 7500.
A Library Deposit to be paid in the first year only (this is refundable): Rs. 7500.
Annual Gymkhana Fee: Rs. 1200
Annual Academic Fee: Rs.3700
Annual Students Emergency Fund: Rs. 300.
For SC/ST candidates, the annual Tuition fee is fully waived, while the other fees are the same as for other students as mentioned above.
IISc Bangalore Scholarships are available through KVPY/INSPIRE/IISc Promotional Scheme(IIScP), on the basis of mode of entry. Meritorious students can also avail of scholarships from multinational organizations and corporate houses as per their policies.
Eligibility requirements
You should have completed the 10+2 exam, or its equivalent in 2022 or expecting to complete the exam in 2023, and should get a first class or 60% or equivalent grade (pass class is sufficient for SC/ST candidates) in the qualifying exam. Note that you should have studied Physics, Chemistry and Maths as main subjects in the qualifying exam along with any other subjects.
As of this year, you also need to qualify for the IISER Aptitude Test.BS (Research) Selection procedure
Students will be accepted for admission to the BS Research program on the basis of a merit list of one of the following national exams-
Important note: Candidate must have qualified in any one of the exams mentioned above, and the exam result must be valid as of 1st August 2023.Application procedure
Applications will be accepted online in online mode through the official IISc Bangalore admissions website. You need to register first with your name, date of birth, and email address. It is important to put the name and date of birth exactly as it appears on relevant certificates, as these cannot be changed later. On registration, you will get an email from noreply.admission@auto.iisc.ac.in with a link to confirm your email address. Then you can go ahead and apply through the online application form.
The application fee of Rs. 500/- has to be paid online via Net Banking or with a Visa Card/Master Card, Debit/Credit Cards or through UPI. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the application fee is Rs. 250/-. A duly filled-in TA form with journey tickets should be submitted to the Admissions Unit within 15 days of joining the Institute. Beyond this period, no claim will be accepted.
