About IIT Roorkee

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee is one of the top engineering colleges in India famed for its quality of education and infrastructure. Located in the hill state of Uttarakhand it is an institute of national importance that has been contributing a lot in terms of education as well as research in areas of science, engineering and technology. The summer internship offered by the institute is thus of immense importance to participating students, irrespective of which institute they are from, be it private or government colleges, including, IITs, NITS, etc. as they will get an insight into the research work being done at this highly acclaimed institute.



About the internship

The summer internship under Spark Fellowships is an IIT Roorkee-funded program. The students selected for the program will receive a weekly stipend of Rs 2500. The internship is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, who are willing to take up research activities during the internship period. The internship period will be at least 8 weeks or more during the summer vacation of the students.

Aim of the internship

Apart from giving students exposure to research activities, the internship program also aims to attract the participating students from other institutes to apply at IIT Roorkee for their postgraduate or doctoral studies.

Accommodation and other facilities

The participating students can avail of accommodation and mess facilities at the institute campus by paying the necessary fees, which come to around Rs 5,500 per month. The charges are at par with those paid by IIT Roorkee students residing in hostels.

For the entire duration of their internship program, the students will be issued a temporary ID pass that will enable them to avail facilities such as the library, computer centre, internet, sports, medical, research labs, recreation rooms and so on. In this regard, the students need to maintain necessary decorum and follow the conduct rules while availing of the above facilities. Any failure on the student's part will lead to the termination of their internship.

Completion certificate

On successful completion of the internship, the students will be issued a certificate by the institute signed by the Dean SRIC. Along with the student's name, the mentor's name will also find mentioned in the certificate.

Eligibility criteria

For availing of this internship offer, students should be currently enrolled in any of the undergraduate or postgraduate degree programs such as B.Arch./B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc/MA and completed at least two semesters in the relevant discipline. Private or government, the students could be from any institute in India, be it IITs, NITs, IISc, IISERs, VITs, SRM, and so on. IIT Roorkee students may also apply.

The minimum CGPA criterion for different categories of institutes is as follows-
  • IITs and IIsc - CGPA > 7.5
  • NITs, IISERs, NISER, IIEST, UM-DAECBS - CGPA > 8.0
  • Students of other institutes - CGPA > 8.5

It is to be noted that M.Tech and B.Sc students are not eligible to apply nor are final year students of B.Tech. For B.Tech students, at least one semester should be remaining after summer 2023.

How to apply

To apply for the internship, the candidates should visit the Spark official website of IIT Roorkee and register themselves. They need to then login and submit the application online. Following are the documents to be uploaded for submitting the application (the file size of the uploaded documents should not be more than 200 KB)-
  1. Last semester mark sheet of current degree program

  2. Current passport photograph of self

  3. A research statement of approx. 500 words. Should mention your interest in research, previous research if any and your area of interest.

  4. A brief resume (of 1-2 pages)

Students of other institutes will have to submit a No Objection Certificate from their respective institutes at the time of joining.

At the time of application, the candidates as per their choice need to mention the names of five faculty members interested in having a summer intern under them. Selection of the students will be based on their academic credentials and the research statement submitted.
