Top reasons why some students dislike to study

This article explains various reasons why some students do not like to study. The reason can vary from not following a strict timetable to having many distractions. It can also be due to having a different learning style.

Introduction

Some students are attentive in their class. They are well-disciplined when it comes to finishing their classwork or homework. They fare well in their exams. They come up with flying colours every year by ranking high in their class. On the other hand, there are a few students who do not like to study. They are forced by their parents and teachers to become studious but they just don't listen. They are forced to finish their homework but they fail to do that because they dislike studying. They are provided with extra help. They are enrolled in private tuitions but nothing sort of helps them. Parents themselves take the matter into their hands and start spending some time to make students concentrate on their studies. Yet, no improvement can be seen in them. Parents and teachers feel that kids are running away from their studies because they are not studious enough. However, there are plenty of reasons why students are disengaged in or dislike their studies. This article explains some common reasons for students to dislike their studies.

Common reasons why students dislike studying

  • They fail to apply it to the practical world: This is the most common problem faced by the majority of students now a day. The real intention of studying any subject is lost. Right from kindergarten, kids are asked to study well and score well in exams. They are fed in their little brains that by doing that year after year, they will end up becoming a good professional such as a doctor or an engineer. The intention should be to gain knowledge. That intention is lost somewhere. The focus is more on the result. Thus, the majority of students do what they are trained to do. They do not understand what they are studying and why they are studying but yet continue to do that so that they meet the results. They cannot see the practical application of anything that they are learning. However, some students just cannot blindly do that. They act as rebels. When they cannot apply their mathematics formulas in the real world and scientific phenomena in day-to-day life, it irritates them and they lose interest in their studies. Thus, they dislike studying.

  • Studying only brings criticism to them: Students need constant motivation even if their grades are falling. Criticism brings their morale down. The constant comparison does no good for them. Some students are too sensitive when compared to the rest. Some students will start escaping from studying when they will consistently score low marks. Even after trying when they are not able to pass or excel the way their parents want them to excel, they will give up on studying. They will feel that there is no point in studying hard if their parents and teachers have nothing but criticism for them. Constant comparison with others, unrealistic hopes for the future, and too many expectations from them will put them under a lot of pressure. When they do not fare well the way their elders want them to, they stop working hard. They cannot face constant pressure and criticism and that is the reason they start disliking studies.

  • They have different learning styles: Not every student is the same when it comes to learning. Some like to learn by reading, while others understand well when they write it down. Some like to watch visuals and others like the auditory style of learning. The key is in experimenting with the different styles of learning. However, in schools and colleges, teachers fail to do so. They have a fixed schedule and a fixed mode of teaching. They cannot change their style as per the requirement of different students. When the mentor's style of teaching does not match the student's style of learning, the student starts disliking the studies. Also, some may find their mentor's way of teaching dull. They may be fast learners and if their mentor is spoon-feeding them, they will start disliking the subject. Suppose they are slow learners and the mentor is rushing to finish the syllabus at the earliest, they will fail to cope with the speed and give up on even trying to understand what is been taught to them.

  • Studying is not their top priority: Some students do not like to study because they have some other things in their lives that rank high on their priority list. They may be more interested in playing sports. They want to spend more time drawing or painting. They may like to dance or sing. When studies take up most of their time, they do not have much left to carry out what amazes and amuses them. Thus, they start to dislike it by slowly deviating and disengaging from it. Many students have a skill for something. Some of them suppress it and concentrate only on their studies. Some of them manage both together. Whereas, those who cannot find a solution for how to manage both give up on their studies. Moreover, parents and teachers do not understand their point of view. For elders, education is the top priority. They want students to fare well in their studies and for them, the rest of the things does not matter at all. However, students who cannot rank studies as the top priority in their list give up on their studies.

  • Too many distractions: School and home environments should be such that, they should provide a comfortable place for students to study. When they do not get to enjoy that, they lose interest in their studies. Sometimes students give up on their studies when they cannot concentrate on them anymore due to toxic family members or a disturbing home environment. It steals their peace of mind and all they want to do is to escape from there. Sometimes their friends may cause a distraction and not allow them to be studious. Sometimes criticizing, abusive, and bullying teachers or a toxic school environment may cause disinterest in the studies. Addictions such as alcohol, drugs, television, and smartphones may distract students from their regular studies. Certain emotional traumas or wounds caused to them will steal them away from their studies. Stress and anxiety present in their lives due to one or the other reason is again a top distraction.

  • Not having a proper timetable: Some students are not serious when it comes to studying. They feel that they will study only during exam time and score passing marks. They do not keep up with the teachers for the rest of the year by learning the content as and when it is taught and by indulging themselves in repeated revisions. They are too lazy to follow a fixed timetable to finish their homework, learn the taught content and timely submit their work. They keep delaying their studies. They find the content boring and lectures dull. They find sticking to the timetable very difficult. Thus, they take an easy way out. They put their studies as their last priority and everything else above it. They do what pleases them and waste their time. They only get back to their studies before the exams. They then find it extremely hard to understand everything at once because of too much syllabus to cover in too little time.

True. Some children will not like to study. Even if somebody forces them also, they can't study well. They may sit in front of the book but will never concentrate on the matter in the book. The main reason for this may be not having an interest in what they are studying. The same individual who is not studying well may excel in some other areas. So parents should see the interests of the child and think of ways and means to bring interest in the child.

My sister never liked reading a book. She was intelligent. She wanted to hear as many times as possible but never liked reading. Those days we didn't have recorders. So I used to sit with her and explain the lesson as many times as possible and I used to recite the lesson just like a story. That had given good results. While narrating the subject I gradually made her read for a few minutes. Slowly she started reading for longer duration and over a period of a year or so, she started reading on her own.

So to bring interest in the student towards studies, a lot of work is to be carried out by their parents and initially support the student and see that the attitude of the student will change. That will definitely give excellent positive results.
