It would be highly advantageous if you have computer proficiency with the ability to collate data, analyze it and prepare reports, as well as have some basic knowledge of intellectual property rights. Some experience in research, working on project reports, and the like would also be beneficial.

The Training

The WISE-IPR internship with a monthly stipend is for the duration of one year, providing in-depth training in various aspects of intellectual property rights, including the legal aspects. There will be an initial orientation program for one month which is conducted in New Delhi. This will incorporate lecture sessions as well as field visits. In the lectures, you will be studying the gamut of IPR, such as auditing, licensing, policy development, mapping with the aid of technological tools, creating a portfolio, etc. You will also know about searching for patents, learn the basics of computer software required for IPR, and pick up skills in technical writing, as well as communication skills.

Subsequent to the orientation program, you will attend hands-on training sessions at private law firms, government agencies, etc that are actively associated with IPR practices as well as workshops and seminars related to the drafting of patents, patent search methods, etc. The place of training, located in the neighbourhood of the Coordination Centres, will be decided by TIFAC. Accordingly, you must be prepared to relocate to the area where you will be placed for training.

Note that you are required to attend the orientation program and the training sessions on a regular basis as per the schedule, with only 8 days of leave permitted during the one year of the internship.

Stipend

The monthly stipend is based on the academic qualification of the candidate, as follows- (i) Rs. 35,000/- per month for candidates with a Ph.D. in Basic or Applied Sciences or an equivalent degree; (ii) Rs. 30,000/- per month for candidates with M.Phil./M.Tech./M.Pharma./M.VSc. or an equivalent degree; and (iii) Rs. 25,000/- per month for candidates with M.Sc. in Basic or Applied Sciences/B.Tech./MBBS or an equivalent degree.

Career scope

The WISE-IPR has been hugely successful, especially since it provides the possibility of working independently, even from home. TIFAC does not provide placement assistance or provide any guarantees for employment. Nevertheless, not only have the scientists from earlier batches cleared the Patent Agent Exam that is conducted by the Patent Office of India, but a good number have also got gainful employment or started their own professional ventures.

Selection of candidates for WISE-IPR

On screening of applications, if you are shortlisted, you have to appear for an online exam that will be conducted on an all-India basis at an exam centre. Based on the scores of the exam, a merit list will be prepared, and if you are on the list, you will attend an interview at a coordination centre.

WISE-IPR Online exam

The two-hour exam will have 120 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). The first section of 60 questions will be general in nature and common to all candidates. The questions in this section will be related to aptitude, general science, IPRs, English language, etc. The second section, also of 60 questions, will be the technical subject section, based on your specific subject stream. The questions will be a mix of the 10+2/UG/PG degree level syllabus. The subject domains include life sciences, engineering, pharma, technology, etc (refer to the official website for details). You will be awarded one mark for every correct answer, and 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.
