A Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) is a co-ed school that is a fully residential school from Class VI to Class XII. Following the syllabus of the CBSE Board, the school gives quality contemporary education, including computer skills, for free. Hostel accommodation is provided on campus, for which there is no charge. There are also no extra charges for the school textbooks, school uniforms, and stationery required. Nominal monthly fees have to be paid only by students of Classes IX to XII towards Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN). However, students who belong to the categories of Schedule Caste (SC) or Schedule Tribe (ST), or Below Poverty Line (BPL), as well as girls, are exempt from paying this fee.
With JNVs located primarily in rural areas, for students up to Class VIII, the medium of instruction is in the mother tongue or in the regional language where the JNV is located. English is the medium of instruction for Maths and Science subjects from Class IX onward, and the subject of Social Science lessons is either Hindi or English medium. A lot of emphasis is given to sports and games, and other co-curricular activities of NSS, NCC, Yoga, etc. If feasible, Class IX students of a JNV based in a Hindi-speaking area are given the opportunity to study for a year in another JNV in a non-Hindi-speaking region under the migration scheme of NVS so that they can know about another region's culture.
