About Institute

Institute of Advanced Virology (IAV), Thiruvananthapuram is an autonomous institution under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of Kerala. It was established in 2019 as Virus Research Institute. It is affiliated with the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), Faridabad, and Cochin University of Science & Technology (CUSAT). The Institute is equipped with modern technology which focuses on research, diagnosis, and management of emerging and re-emerging infectious viral diseases. Currently, IAV Thiruvananthapuram is inviting applications for admission in Ph.D. programs for sessions 2023-24 from highly motivated Indian students. Students with fellowships can apply for the same.

    Candidates who have been admitted to the Ph.D. program at IAV can avail of the fellowship for which they are qualified as per the rules of the funding agency. The Institute of Advanced Virology will not provide any fellowship or financial support to the candidates.

    Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates should have an MSc or equivalent Degree in Life Sciences or MVSc/MBBS or equivalent Degree in the concerned subject from a recognized University. They must have scored at least 60% marks or equivalent grade points in the qualifying examination. There will be a relaxation of 5% of marks for the candidates who belong to SC/ST/Differently-abled categories. Thus, they will require 55% marks or an equivalent grade point for admission.

  • Candidates must have a valid JRF Fellowship from any of the following agencies such as UGC/CSIR/ICMR/DBT/DST-INSPIRE/ or any other nationally-competitive fellowship. The fellowship must be for 5 years.

  • Candidates who are in their final semester/awaiting results can also apply.

  • Candidates who are awaiting results for a grant of fellowship can also apply.

  • The upper age limit is 28 years (as of December 2023). However, SC/ST/Physically challenged candidates will be given age relaxation as per Government of India regulations.

    • How to Apply

    The candidates who wish to join the Ph.D. program must visit the Ooficial website of IAV Thiruvananthapuram, and read the instructions carefully before applying. To apply the candidate must download the application form, print it, and fill it. Scanned copies of required documents are to be annexed with the application form and it should be emailed before the last date. Applicants can apply for more than one department. Once selected, candidates who have registered for PhD either at RCB or CUSAT as per the guidelines of the universities, they would be not allowed to change.

    Application Fee

    The completed application form must be accompanied by the prescribed application fee of Rs.500/- (non-refundable) and paid at the time of submission of the online form. The application Fee must be paid online using 'SB Collect' of State Bank of India through the URL given in the Payment Stage of the online application.

  • Graduation Marksheet

  • Post-Graduation Marksheet

  • Fellowship award letter

  • Caste certificate (In case of SC or ST candidates)

  • Latest Income and Asset Certificate from the Competent Authority (In case of EWS category students)

    • Selection Procedure

    Selection of the candidate for the Ph.D. program will be made based on their performance in personal interviews. Candidates will be shortlisted and will be called for an in-person interview. The name of the shortlisted candidate for interview schedules will be displayed on the official website of IAV Thiruvananthapuram. The interview will be conducted either through online or offline mode that will be communicated to the candidates in due course of time.

    Important Dates

    Opening date to submit online application: May 22, 2023.
    Last date to submit an online application: June 19, 2023.
    Interview date for the shortlisted candidates: July 06 & 07, 2023.
    Commencement of program: August 1, 2023.
