Overview of the DS & AI joint Master's course

The Joint Master's Program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is for the duration of 18 months, with an academic experience of studying initially at IIT Madras, Chennai, Tamil Nadu that includes a quick hands-on industrial experience, and then taking up the second semester at the University of Birmingham in the UK.

Subsequently, it is entirely up to you where you wish to continue the remaining part of the program. One option is to finish the research project and take up electives, both, at the University of Birmingham which means that you will be continuing to stay in the UK for a total of a year (this is Track 1). The other option is to head back to Chennai after the second semester in the UK, and complete your research project as well as electives, both, at IIT Madras (this is Track 2). Whichever option you choose, rest assured you will be guided in your research work by the best of the best faculty of both these eminent institutes.

What you will learn

Here's how and what you will study under the two aforementioned tracks-
For DS & AI joint Master's course Track 1, you attend classes at IIT Madras from the commencement of the course in July right up to November, followed up immediately with an industrial placement till December. In January next year, you then head to the University of Birmingham and complete the remainder of the program.

In this track, the main modules that are mandatory include the foundations of data science and machine learning, learning data structures and algorithms, getting up to date on present-day AI and ML concepts, and then doing the industrial placement. Some very fascinating optional modules are also offered, such as those on natural language processing, the role of imaging and computer vision in technological systems (microscopy techniques, for example), creating a neural network and then understanding how it can be applied in a real-world scenario, etc.

For DS & AI joint Master's course Track 2, just like for Track 1, you will first attend classes at IIT Madras, complete an industrial placement until December, and then go to the University of Birmingham. In this case, though, you will study there in the UK for up to six months and head back to IIT Madras in July for the research project and electives.

In this Track, the core modules are the same as those for Track 1. The optional modules, though, may have a few choices that are not there for Track 1, such as Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning, etc.

Note- you are advised to check the official website to know the course modules for the two Tracks, and check out the details mentioned of the course sessions and mobility between the two institutes so that you are clear on which Track to select as per what you wish to learn and where.
