As a public-spirited initiative to enable the deprived, but deserved rural engineering aspirants, the STARS scheme has been launched by the VIT Group of Institutions in 2008. Education for children in rural areas still being inaccessible, and higher education in professional courses has been expensive requiring enormous funds indeed. Since most of the rural youth whose parents have unstable incomes are unable to continue their higher studies even though they are intellectual. To overcome this societal inequality between urban and rural youth to some extent, this unique educational scheme has been instituted. Under this merit-based scheme, a girl and a boy from any government school in rural areas in each district of Tamil Nadu have been admitted to the UG program in VIT. The scholarships include a 100% waiver of tuition fees, free hostel, and food, and book bank facilities.Key Features of the STARS Scheme
