What is global warming - reasons and preventive measures
In this article, I am discussing about global warming that can damage earth's crust. It is caused due to different reasons. We should use different strategies to prevent global warming so we do not experience dire results tomorrow.
The overall increase in the earth's atmosphere is referred to as global warming. It is also represented by the changes in weather patterns. According to recent studies, the overall temperature of the earth has increased by 1 degree Celsius, or 2 degrees Fahrenheit. These unusual weather patterns in the atmosphere cause ecological imbalance, causing problems such as the generation of heat waves, the melting of the polar ice caps, and heat-related illnesses. We should strive hard to prevent global warming to save our earth. The five greenhouse gases causing global warming are nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour, and chlorofluorocarbon. What leads to global warming
Gases such as carbon dioxide and other pollutants are accumulated in the atmosphere. Due to the excessive accumulation of these unwanted materials in the atmosphere, sun rays are absorbed, causing excessive heat. The radiation normally escapes into space, but due to excessive pollutants, it is absorbed in the atmosphere. Gases that trap sun rays in the atmosphere are nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, fluorinated gases, etc. These gases are known as greenhouse gases and have been present in the atmosphere for a long time. The temperature becomes even warmer due to the increased level of such gases in the atmosphere. What causes global warming?
Fossil fuels
Burning fossil fuels such as gasoline, coal, natural gas, and oil causes the greenhouse effect. It is caused by different human activities.Agricultural practices
The farmers intensively use fertilizers or pesticides that pollute the atmosphere, as these substances contain harsh chemicals. They also follow machine-intensive farming methods that lead to a concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. These gases increase the overall temperature of the atmosphere. Industrial development
Due to the harmful emission of chemicals from factories, the air is polluted, thus allowing the sun's rays to penetrate into the atmosphere. They release harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Gases such as nitrous oxide and methane affect precipitation levels, making the climate warmer. Permafrost is a frozen layer of soil containing harmful elements.Use of chlorofluorocarbon
We are using appliances such as air-conditioners or refrigerators thereby increasing CFC content in the environment. It damages the ozone layer of the earth that protects us from harmful Ultra Violet rays of the sun.Natural causes of global warming
The natural factors causing global warming are water vapor, permafrost, volcanoes, and blazes. When water is evaporated from seas, lakes, rivers, etc, it remains in the environment in the form of humidity and increasing temperatures. Forest fires release a large amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Permafrost is a form of frozen soil present in the glaciers containing harmful elements. When it melts, it releases harmful gases that cannot escape into space.
How can we prevent global warming
Preventing climate changes
Use renewable energies such as solar wind, geothermal, biomass, etc. So, you can prevent the burning of fossil fuels.Transportation system should be sustainable
Public transportation should be promoted by encouraging hydrogen or electric mobility or carpooling. So, CO2 emission in the atmosphere is reduced.Use energy-efficient appliances
You should buy appliances such as heat pumps, washing machines, water heaters, etc with a Star label as such appliances are highly efficient.Do not waste water
More energy is required for the heat pumps and treat water, so take short showers and switch off the tap when not required. It reduces carbon pollution in the atmosphere.Energy-efficient bulbs
Instead of using primitive incandescent bulbs, do use LED light bulbs that release one-sixth of we energy of the incandescent bulbs, but the same amount of light. Recycling
Learn different techniques of recycling to prevent the emission of carbon into the atmosphere. Instead of throwing objects into the bin, donate them to charities or make them reusable. Do not use plastics again and again.
Global warming is a real threat that requires attention and control to see that the earth will continue to be useful for human beings to live on. The ozone layer in space is absorbing dangerous rays from the Sun and giving us useful heat only. But some of the actions by human beings on this earth are causing damage to the ozone layer which is acting as a filter. This is making Global warming happen.
The main reason for this Global Warming is Greenhouse Gases (GHGs). These GHGs are being produced on the earth because of the actions of human beings. The concentration of GHGs is increasing day by day because of various actions like burning fossil fuels and conversion of green lands to concrete forests. Many trees are being cut and we are converting that land for living by constructing buildings. We use various fuels for our transportation and when these fuels are burned they emit GHGs into the atmosphere. As the concentration of GHGs increases in the atmosphere the average temperature will also go up. A small change in the temperature will have a major impact on the weather. These changes will have a big impact on human lives.
To avoid this global warming, all of us should take action to reduce GHG emissions into the atmosphere. One should not cut trees and plantation should be carried out as much as possible. Burning fossil fuels should be minimized.
Minimizing the use of plastics, avoiding using fluorocarbons, using environmentally friendly fuels for transportation, etc. are helpful for preventing Global Warming. A good topic from the author.
