General information: The OST is an entrance test that is mandatory for eligibility to teach in any Army Public School (APS) in India. There are PRT, PGT, and TGT vacancies on a regular/fixed-term basis at the CBSE-affiliated APS. You can apply for any one post, that is, PRT or TGT, or PGT, in all subjects if you meet the criteria for each specific subject. As per eligibility, you can teach a specific class in the APS. Thus, as a Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) you can teach in Classes IX to XII, as a Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) you can teach in Classes VI to X, and as a Primary Teacher (PRT) you can teach in Classes I to V.

On successfully clearing the OST, you will get a Score Card which will permit you to apply for the teaching post. Then all you need to do is check out the website of the APS where a vacancy may be available, as well as the AWES website which provides quick information about such vacancies from time to time. An APS will also likely publish a recruitment notice in the local newspapers.

Eligibility criteria for AWES OST registration

You can appear for the OST irrespective of whether or not you have experience. In case you do not have teaching experience, the age criterion of below 40 years will apply. In case you do have teaching experience of at least five years within the last 10 years, then the age criterion of below 57 years will apply.

With respect to academic qualifications, applying for a Post Graduate Teacher's post (PGT) requires you to have completed a 2-year Integrated Postgraduate course, that is, M.A. or M.Sc. as applicable, of Regional College of Education of NCERT in the concerned subject with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks.

For a Trained Graduate Teacher's post (TGT), you need to have completed a 4-year Degree course, that is, M.A. or M.Sc. as applicable, of Regional College of Education of NCERT in the concerned subject with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks. It is also mandatory to have a B.Ed. or equivalent degree from a recognized University and passed the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET)/Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) conducted by CBSE/State Govt. as per NCTE norms. Computer knowledge and English fluency are also essential.

For a Primary Teacher's post (PRT) you should have a Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 50% marks in the concerned subject/combination of subjects and in the aggregate. A B.El.Ed. or a 2-year D.El.Ed. is the additional qualification required.
