Overview of KL University, Vijayawada

Instituted in 1980-81 as an engineering college in Vijayawada in the State of Andhra Pradesh, KL College of Engineering has attained the Deemed to be University status, accredited by the UGC, MHRD GOI. This elite university has been declared a Category I Institution as an abode of learning for ignited young minds. Situated near the riverbeds of Krishna River, the KL University campus has been nicknamed Green Fields since it is surrounded by natural beauty and is pristine. About Food Technology at the KL University

Food Technology is a program of science that has dealt with different techniques in the field of production, preservation, processing, packing, distribution/marketing, and quality management of food products. The food processing industry in India has been listed at the fifth position according to the report of the India Brand Equity Foundation and has been one of the largest global food processing sectors accelerating career growth up to nine million in 2024.

The B.Sc. Food Technology course at the KLU involves the study of innovative methods not only in the production of nutritious food products but also preservation and safe storage of food and efficient marketing/distribution of the same. With the goal to interlink the needs of the farmers, consumers, and entrepreneurs, KLEF (Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation) has been established in 2021. The Food Technology Department of the KL University in Vijayawada has been surrounded by lush green agricultural/poultry farms along with marine/aquaculture. The Food Technology Department has been installed with a vision for youngsters to be proficient in the knowledge of food processing and storage of food products for the betterment of society. The curriculum aims to support the environment with innovative techniques in the sector of food science and technology. Faculties with expertise both in academics and industry strengthen not only the teaching part but also upscaled research programs contributing to the development of food science/biotechnology and the food processing and packaging sector. Faculties include experts, who are experienced in diet diversification, nutrition, and standardized food fortification technology to make the common public aware of hidden hunger/micronutrient deficiencies.

Candidates who have completed plus 2 with any stream and at least 55% marks are eligible to apply.

Academic Programs

Currently, KL University offers a three-year B.S. (Regular) and a four-year B.S. (Honors) program in Food Technology and if the aspirants intend to join the B.S. Honors program they can register while they have been through their first year B.S. Regular program.

The food technology graduates will be employable in the food industries, both government and private sector, and self-employed as entrepreneurs. The graduates may take up high-end positions in the field of food production, processing, quality and safety system, quality control, research and development, marketing, etc. The food industry is an inexorable sector and its growth at the global level provides immense opportunity for food technology aspirants to have a niche career in this field. In India, due to inadequate warehousing and packaging facilities, more than INR 44,000 crores worth of food products have been wasted every year. At present, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries aims to curb food waste by establishing more food processing facilities across the country and thus providing umpteen job opportunities in India.

Curriculum

The course curriculum has been designed in such a way as to provide in-depth scientific/technological expertise in food processing and to solve the issues giving more importance to R&D in the industry. In addition, a holistic approach to the development of the economy and the environment and the nutritional adequacy of the consumers plays a significant role in learning. Apart from the technical expertise, KL University Food Technology Department has been committed to propagating the learners' life skills to succeed both personally and professionally. The curriculum is based on industry-ready and globally recognized guidelines as per the Institute of Food Technologists, USA. Internships at American and European universities and their industries have been oriented to strengthen the curriculum. Other than the regular core curriculum, it is mandatory for the candidates to obtain any two of the below-mentioned certificate programs, which are globally recognized. They have been Quality Management Systems (QMS), HACCP, KAIZEN, Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), Six Sigma/Lean Six Sigma, Food Safety and Quality Auditor; Quality Improvement Associate, Organizational Excellence (OE), Training programs from FSSAI (GFLP, etc.), Import and Export, Supply Chain Management.
