Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai invites applications for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) programs in Physics and seven engineering disciplines for the academic year 2023-24. You can pursue the Ph.D. as a full-time or part-time research scholar. The final selection of candidates will be done on the basis of merit and performance during the interview and the written test, and not merely on the basis of academic qualifications.About VJTI Mumbai Ph.D. Programs
Duration
You need to take up the Ph.D. for a minimum duration of 3 years (this will include course work), and up to a maximum of 6 years from the date of admission to the Ph.D. program. In case you require more time, at the most you will be given two additional years. This can be obtained through a re-registration process as per VJTI norms. However, with the extension, you then must complete the Ph.D. within a maximum of a total of 8 years starting from the date of admission. Female Ph.D. scholars and those with more than 40% disability will be given a further two years, in the case of which they must complete the Ph.D. within a maximum of a total of 10 years starting from the date of admission.
Requirement for Full-time Research Scholars Both sponsored and non-sponsored scholars will be required to be present at VJTI for the duration of three years on a full-time basis. If you are not a sponsored candidate, then you may be given the opportunity to take up an assistantship in research or teaching.
Requirement for Part-time Research Scholars and Internal Candidates of VJTI: You are required to complete at least two semesters of the residential requirement at the VJTI campus. If you are an internal candidate, then you are required to work under the supervision of a VJTI supervisor and/or an external supervisor from IIT or another research organization (this is optional with a recommendation from DAC).VJTI Ph.D. Program Disciplines

Once you are allotted a seat, you need to pay the following fee to confirm admission at VJTI for the Ph.D. program-
For Sponsored candidates, the fee is Rs. 1,17,051/-.
For Non-sponsored candidates, the fee is Rs. 92,051/-.

You should have completed a one-year/two-semester Master's Degree program after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor's Degree program with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade (min. 50% if you are applying in the reserved category).
Also acceptable is a two-year/four-semester Master's Degree program after a 3-year Bachelor's Degree program with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade (min. 50% if you are applying in the reserved category). VJTI Ph.D. 2023 Admissions Application Procedure

Ensure that you enter the Discipline code (this is given in the official notification) as given in the official notification, and upload the required documents and certificates, otherwise, your application will not be accepted. If you are pursuing the Ph.D. as a sponsored candidate, you have to produce (i) a sponsorship letter and (ii) a 'No Objection Certificate' from the employer – the prescribed format for both these are available in the annexures given in the official notification.
Application fee: General category candidates have to pay an application fee of Rs. 500/-. Reserved category candidates (SC, ST, VJ/DT- NT(A), NT(B), NT(C), NT(D), OBC, SBC, EBC, EWS, and Differently abled persons) have to pay an application fee of Rs. 300/-. The application fee should be paid online through the SBI link that is given in the official notification.
Photocopies of the following documents/certificates, duly attested, must be submitted with the application form-VJTI Mumbai Ph.D. Entrance Test
The entrance test will be conducted on the VJTI campus in the respective Departments. The questions will be equally divided between research methodology and those specific to the subject. You need to score a minimum of 50% in the entrance test to be eligible for the interview round, with the number of candidates eligible for the interview to be decided by the institute. The syllabus of the entrance test for each discipline is provided in the official notification.
You need not appear for the written test if you have a Ph.D. Degree from the University of Mumbai or any other recognized University. Those with a valid score in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET ISLET/GATE/INSPIRE/PET (of Maharashtra Public Universities) and any other Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) are also exempt from appearing for the written test.
Important note: Those seeking admission to the Ph.D. program in the discipline of Civil Engineering will be required to appear for the entrance test specifically of the M.Tech specialization/other specialization. Hence, you will get admission only in the Ph.D. program of that specialization in which you pass the entrance test and not in any other specialization.Important dates
Online applications can be submitted from 24th August 2023.
The last date to submit the online application is 13th September 2023 up to 5 p.m.
The names of candidates who are shortlisted for admission will be displayed on the official website on 18th September 2023.
Clarifications or objections can be submitted by candidates by email to phd_admission@vjti.ac.in by 20th September 2023, 4.30 p.m.
The final list of shortlisted candidates after corrections will be put up on the website on 22nd September 2023.
The VJTI Ph.D. program entrance test will be conducted by the respective Departments in offline mode on 26th September 2023.
Interviews will be conducted at the campus of VJTI, Mumbai by the respective Departments on 29th September 2023.
The final Merit List of selected candidates will be displayed on the official website on 5th October 2023.
The closing date to confirm acceptance of provisional admission by paying the Ph.D. program fees is 10th September 2023.
