Overview

The Department of Statistics was started in 1948. It has two computer labs that are equipped with contemporary software and Internet facilities and a library with research journals and reference books. The Department of Statistics Placement Cell has a very efficiently organized recruitment schedule, with the placement session usually beginning in October. Companies that are interested in hiring students are instructed to contact the representatives of the Placement Cell by email/fill in the online campus recruitment form of the Department. Recruiters in past years have included reputed banks, financial organizations, and top corporate houses, including Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, Nielsen, Cognizant, Reliance Industries, TCS, Accenture, etc.

Hostel seats are very limited for students pursuing courses in this Department, so if you are keen to stay on campus, confirm the availability of rooms for PGDASS students before applying.



About PGDASS

The Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Statistics with Software (PGDASS) is a one-year, two-semester course, with four subjects in the first, and four in the second. There will be mid-term internal exams and external exams. The course will be taught with updated Stats-related software, such as R/SAS/SPSS/MINITAB.

An interesting part of the course is enhancing language proficiency in English in the second half of the second semester. Thus you will learn the fundamentals of English grammar, understand how to write a formal letter, create an impressive C.V., prepare for interviews and GDs, and present an effective PPT.

In the first semester you will study-
  1. Basic Statistics: A general introduction, bar diagrams, theorems, hypothesis, etc

  2. Statistics in market research: Techniques to identify problems, research designs, preparing a research proposal, current trends in market research, etc

  3. Applied regression analysis and analysis of variance: Simple and multiple linear regression, various concepts of variance, etc

  4. Applied multivariate techniques: Organizing and analyzing data, applying statistics to data, etc




In the second semester you will study-
  1. Six-Sigma and total quality management: A general introduction to Lean and Six-Sigma, statistical phases and techniques, etc

  2. Statistics in healthcare and clinical research: Understanding statistical plans in clinical trials, Parametric and non-parametric tests for hypothesis, Meta-Analysis, etc

  3. Business Analytics: Concepts and methods of forecasting, quantitative techniques used in making decisions, financial analytics, investment analytics, etc

  4. Communication skills, soft skills (refer to enhancing English proficiency mentioned earlier) and Statistical project (this will be a project on Statistical Application based on data)

Eligibility criteria

You need to be a Graduate in any stream from a recognized university and appear for the Department's PGDASS Aptitude Entrance Test. Those who are Graduates with B.Sc. Statistics are exempted from appearing for the entrance test.

PGDASS Course Fee: Rs. 40,000/-.

PGDASS Admissions Application Procedure

You have to fill in the Google form https://forms.gle/rnYxFGM3uXMtpoJU9 to apply for the PGDASS program.

The following documents should be sent by email to statistics@statistics.mu.ac.in – (1) a Self-attested copy of the Graduation mark sheet (Semester V and VI), and (2) a Self-attested copy of your Aadhar Card.

Important dates

The last date to fill in the application form (Google form) is 30th August 2023.
The Aptitude Entrance Test is scheduled for 4th September 2023.
The Merit List of selected candidates will be displayed on 8th September 2023.



Additional Notes: After the merit list is put up, you have to pay the course fee. Details of the payment mode, documents that are required for verification (such as mark sheets, photos, etc.), and other further steps in the admission process will be put up on the official website or you can send an email for clarifications.

If you are a student of a university other than the University of Mumbai, then you are required to bring the originals and copies of the mark sheets of the first, second, and third years, and must submit the migration certificate within one month of getting admission to the PGDASS course. Students of a university other than that of the University of Mumbai are also requested to check the official website for other mandatory documents (and any additional fee if applicable).
