National Book Trust, India (NBT) which is under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India is conducting an online professional book publishing course for the duration of three months, starting at the end of this month. Applications should be submitted in the prescribed form by email only.

The online course will be conducted only on weekends, that is, on Saturdays and Sundays, for the duration of three months, from the 28th of October 2023 to the 4th of February 2024. Each online session will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with two classes in a day, and a 30-minute break in between each class. English is the medium of instruction for all learners. Attendance, internal assessments, and submission of project work are the determining factors towards the successful completion of the course. You will receive a certificate of participation on completing the course.
Components of the online course: An introduction to book publishing is the initial module of the book publishing course from 28th September to 26th November 2023, which will be preceded by the inauguration of the course and an introductory message by NBT's Director. During these classes, you will be introduced to pursuing book publishing as a career, learning the history of a book through the journey of written communication, knowing about major publishing houses around the world with a perspective of publishing in India, challenges of publishing books in Indian languages, the structure of a publishing House (various departments), sectors of book publishing (such as a children's book or an academic book), self-publishing of books , etc.
The second module which runs from 2nd December to 23rd December 2023 is centered on the editorial aspects of book publishing. You will get an insight into the relationships between authors and editors, how manuscripts go through a vetting process, the role of a literary agent, understanding copyrights and royalties, proofreading and detailed scrutinizing of manuscripts for English errors, factual content, etc.
The third module from 24th December 2023 to 14th January 2024 focuses on the design and production of books. You will learn technical terms, understand the various printing processes, including digital printing, delve into the aspects of paper quality and bookbinding, get an insight into the production of audiobooks, etc.
The fourth and final module starts on 20th January 2024 and ends on 4th February 2024. This component has lessons related to marketing and sales of books, such as brand management, mobile and online marketing tools, and distribution of books at book stores , exporting books to the international markets, and financial management aspects that are crucial to fixing the price of a book and managing costs.
Additional course work: You can take up an internship at a publishing house anywhere in India prior to February 2023, but this is not mandatory. It is essential, however, to complete all the assigned study work and practical project work, and submit them no later than 31st March 2024.
Eligibility criteria: You should be a Graduate or have a higher educational qualification and be associated with the publishing industry directly or indirectly. While applying, you will need to convey your inclination towards a career in book publishing and submit a Statement of Purpose.
Course Fee: The total course fee is Rs. 5,900/- (Rs. 5000 for the course and GST of Rs. 900/-) which has to be paid through online mode only directly into the bank account that is provided in the official notification.
