Overview

With the aim of supporting deserving candidates from financially backward sections to pursue college/university education, the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship 2023-24 (CSSS) has been instituted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Based on the class XII board examination, a total of 82,000 scholarships are awarded to continue full-time UG/PG courses in any stream including professional degrees annually. As a merit-cum-means scholarship, out of the total scholarships, 50% have been earmarked for female applicants. The scholarships have been divided between the state education boards, CBSE, and ICSE boards based on the number of passed-out candidates from different boards of the nation.

Key Features of the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship

As per the government norms, 3% of the CSSS will be allocated to the Union Territory of Ladakh out of the total number of scholarships set apart for the Union Territories of both Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The scholarships have been awarded among the candidates from the Science, Humanities, and Commerce streams as per the ratio of 3:3:1 respectively. If there is any decrease in the number of applications the slots will be allocated in accordance with the categories such as General, OBC, Sc, and ST, gender (female/male), and state quota under the guidelines adhered to by the Ministry of Finance and NITI Aayog. This is for the utmost utilization of funds, which is effective from the academic year 2022-23. The Central Reservation Policy will also be followed regarding the reservation based on merit (27% for OBC, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 5% for Persons with Disabilities).

Scholarship Amount

The scholarship amount will be INR 12,000 per annum for the three-year UG program and INR 20,000 per annum for the PG course. The candidates pursuing Bachelor of Engineering courses or B.Tech courses will receive INR 12,000 p.a. for the first three years and INR 20,000 for the 4th year. The students pursuing 5-year integrated courses will receive INR 20,000 for 4th and 5th year p.a. These scholarship rewards are effective from the financial year 2022-23. However, fresh/renewal scholarships applied for the academic year 2021-22 have been fixed at INR 10,000 per annum even though they will be released during the financial year 2022-23. The scholarship amount will be paid out directly to the students' savings bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer mode and payment status can be tracked through the Public Financial Management System portal with the "Know your payment" template by logging in with the Aadhaar Number/Bank account number/NSP applicant number.

Registrations are being open to apply for the CSS scholarships and the last date to apply is 31, December 2023.

Eligibility to apply for the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship

  • The applicants must have scored above the 80th percentile in the respective stream in class XII of any SEB/CBSE/ICSE Board or equivalent.
  • The candidates need to pursue regular degree programs at the colleges/universities approved by the All India Council for Technical Education and corresponding regulatory bodies.
  • Correspondence/distant mode education/diploma courses are not applicable. The college or institution that the applicants pursue must have a valid AISHE code mentioned in the portal.
  • The pursuant are not supposed to avail of any other scholarship schemes offered by the State governments/fee waiver/reimbursement scheme.
  • The gross income of the parents should not be more than INR 4.5 lakhs per annum.
  • The students should apply online through the National Scholarships Portal alone.

Documents required while applying for the CSS Scholarship

  • Aadhar card number
  • Bank passbook with the account number and the name of the applicant
  • Valid mobile number of his/her own, which should not be changed during the whole process
  • Income certificate of the parents
  • Personal Email ID
  • Caste certificate/disability certificate wherever necessary
  • Copy of the class XII mark sheet

How to apply for the CSS Scholarship?

The students need to register online through the National Scholarship Portal. Prior to filling up the application, they should keep the above-mentioned necessary documents ready with them. While filling up the details, they are required to choose the post-matric option and select the Central Sector Scheme of scholarships for college/university students. Upon filling out the application, they must ensure that the name of the student, father's name, and roll number are the same as mentioned in the roll card/mark sheet to get the details captured in the NSP. Prior to clicking the "submit" button, the applicants need to cross-check the AISHE code of their respective colleges/institutions. On submitting the application online, it is essential to get their online application verified by their respective college/institution. Otherwise, the application will not be considered for scholarship.

The applicants should keep their registered mobile number and email ID active throughout the disbursement of the scholarship. The NSP will communicate all necessary information regarding the scholarship in the future through this mobile number/email ID.

Renewal of CSS Scholarship

An aspirant for the CSS Scholarship is eligible to apply every year for a complete five years including the PG program and in case of candidates studying professional/technical courses, they can renew for four years. The beneficiary of the scholarship scheme needs to apply online through the National Scholarship Portal website for renewal fulfilling the eligibility criteria such as a good percentage and attendance in the semester examinations.
