Forest Research Institute (FRI), a Deemed-to-be University in Dehradun, Uttarakhand has opened online applications for the 2023 Ph.D. Entrance Test for those who are keen to enroll for the Ph.D. programs in Forestry. There are a total of 14 disciplines (fields of study) that research students can pursue.

About FRI Ph.D. Program

Duration: While the Ph.D. program is of 3 years duration, you are permitted to complete it within a maximum of 6 years. At the most, this may be extended for a further two years, but you must complete the Ph.D. within 8 years starting from the date of admission to the program.



You can pursue a Ph.D. program in part-time mode if you are an in-service candidate and fulfill the regulations of the FRI university (refer to the official notification for details).

Additional Notes: You can refer to the official admission notification to know the category-wise seats for each Ph.D. program and the 14 disciplines (field of study) that you can take up.

If you are applying for the seats of FRCE Prayagraj, you must accordingly mention it in the application form so that your application will be considered only for FRCE Prayagraj seats. The interview for these seats will be scheduled at FRI Deemed to be University, Dehradun. Similarly, if you wish to pursue a Ph.D. at FRI Deemed to be University, Dehradun, you must accordingly mention this in the application form to be considered for a seat there only. The same applies for seats at FRC-BR, Aizawl.



Eligibility requirements

You should have a Master's Degree in the subject relevant to the discipline (refer to the official notification for details) with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade that has been awarded through a one-year/two-semester program after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree program.

Also acceptable is a Master's Degree through a 2-year/4-semester program, after a 3-year bachelor's degree program or any equivalent qualifications considered to be equivalent to the master's degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body. It is essential to have obtained a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade with a relaxation of 5% permitted for reserved category candidates.

M.Phil. qualified candidates and those with an accredited qualification that is equivalent to a Master's Degree from a foreign educational institution can also apply for the Ph.D. programs.

Application procedure

You have to download the registration form from the official website (it is part of the official notification) http://fridu.edu.in/

Complete the form and submit it/send it to the research centre for which the form has been filled up. The Nodal Officer of that Research Centre will then send the application form to the FRI Deemed to be University. The application form should not be sent directly to the FRI Deemed to be University, otherwise, it will be rejected. You can directly submit the application form to the Registrar, FRI Deemed to be University only if you are going to pursue the Ph.D. at the FRI, Dehradun research centre.

Application fee: Rs. 1500/- to be paid through a Bank Draft in favour of Registrar, FRI Deemed to be University payable at Dehradun.

Ph.D. Entrance Test Mode and Format

The entrance test of 2½ hours would be held either in offline mode at different Research centres of the Forest Research Institute deemed to be University (refer to the list of 12 centres mentioned in the official notification) or in online mode with a remote Proctored exam. You must bring the Admit Card to the test centre and a valid ID proof otherwise you will not be allowed to appear for the entrance test.

There are two sections in the entrance test- (i) Section-A with 100 questions on Research Methodology, and (ii) Section-B will have 40 questions on General Forestry, and 60 questions will be subject-specific/discipline-specific.

Marking system: You will get one mark for a correct answer, but no negative marks will be given for an incorrect answer.

After the result

If you qualify the entrance test, you will be then called for an interview as per the merit list prepared. A final merit list will then be prepared with a weightage of 70% to the entrance test/UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and similar national level tests, and 30% to the performance in the interview/viva-voce.

If your name appears on the final merit list, then you must report to the Registrar of the FRI Deemed to be University/Nodal Officers of the research centre, as applicable, for compulsory course work of 6 months duration. You are required to complete this pre-Ph.D. compulsory course with a minimum of 55% marks or its equivalent grade.

Note that the registration letter for the Ph.D. degree will be issued only after receipt of the prescribed fees to FRI University.
