The Director, Directorate of Research, Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) invites applications for admission to Ph.D. programs. This is an excellent opportunity to pursue research in diverse fields, including engineering, science, management, etc. SMU is a UGC-recognized, Govt.-approved university, and its programs are approved by the relevant Boards/Councils. There are four academic institutions under the aegis of SMU, namely- Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy, Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing, and the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences (SMU).

There are limited seats available for full-time Ph.D. scholars, with a scholarship of Rs. 20,000/- per month, and free accommodation. In determining whether or not you are eligible for admission, a weightage of 70% will be given for the entrance test and 30% for your performance in the interview/viva- voce. Your application will be recommended by the Department/Institute Research Protocol Evaluation Committee (I-RPEC) based on the presentation of the proposed research protocol and the number of seats available. SMU Ph.D. Fee structure
For full-time Ph.D. programs: Rs.30,000/- per annum.
For internal part-time Ph.D. programs: Rs.30,000/- per annum.
For External Part-Time Ph.D. programs: Rs.40,000/- per annum.

Academic Qualifications: You should have a Master's degree in the relevant field of this University or its equivalent of another recognized University or Institute with a minimum of 55% marks in the qualifying exam (relaxation of 5% of marks is permitted for reserved category candidates). A qualifying degree from a foreign university is permitted upon confirmation that it is an equivalent acceptable qualification by the relevant University body.
While postgraduation is the minimum educational qualification required, graduates, too, can apply. This is only if you have a B.Tech./B.E./M.B.B.S degree with a high first class with relevant experience commensurate to the proposed research and experience equivalent to a postgraduate degree in the relevant field. In this case, you may then be considered for registration on the special recommendation of the University Research Committee (URC). In such a case, you must complete a higher number of credits (24 to 36 credits) as coursework as compared to 10 to 12 credits for those with a postgraduate qualification.
Entrance test: You are required to appear for the Ph.D. Entrance Test. The eligibility criteria to pass the entrance test are as per UGC norms. That is, you should score at least 50 % marks in the entrance exam to be eligible for the interview, with a relaxation of 5 % marks if you are applying in the reserved category, such as SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwD, etc.
Note for international students: If you are applying for a Ph.D. program as a foreign student, then you must produce clearance from the Govt. of India/relevant authorities to be considered eligible, and you also must have a research visa.SMU Ph.D. Application procedure
You have to register and then log in to apply for the SMU Ph.D. program in online mode only at the SMU official website and pay the online application registration fee of Rs. 500/-.

The Ph.D. entrance test will be on 7th December 2023.
