Important tips for parents when the child is disinterested in studies

In this article, I am sharing some important tips for parents if their child is disinterested in studies. Parents should handle the behavior of the child in a mature way and provide some useful tips to develop interest. If your child is interested, only then he/she can succeed in an exam.

Your child is perhaps disinterested in studies and is also scoring lesser marks. You are worried and are convincing your child persistently, but yet your child is still disinterested. Many parents become aggressive towards their children if the child is not studying. They expect that the child should study even without being told to do so. However, the child is simply disinterested in studies and, hence, is not attempting to study independently. Your role is to simply inculcate interest in studies so your child is motivated.

Important tips for parents

Find out the root cause of disinterest

When your child returns home, openly interact with them. Your child is perhaps undergoing emotional stress in school due to aggressive or pushy teachers. Some teachers speak peevishly in the classroom, and the students are discouraged. So, if the child is not motivated in school, then you should inculcate interest. Suggest your child ignore the rude words of the teacher and remain calm. Your child is stressed due to other reasons and is probably not studying. Resolve your child's problem in a mature way and develop an interest in studying.

Teach your child enthusiastically at home

To develop an interest in studying, you should become a tutor for your child. If your child is too disinterested in studies, then even the tutor may not be able to motivate your child. You can use some innovative methods to teach effectively at home. In the case of a young child, let your child first read the lesson and enjoy the colourful pictures in the textbook. If your child is not yet motivated, then you can prepare presentations using software such as PowerPoint. However, do not persistently prepare such colourful presentations on computers or laptops, as your child may become addicted. You could narrate the lesson from the textbook in the form of a story.

If you are teaching science, then let your child understand real-life applications. For example, if the chapter is 'Air around us', then let your child understand the concept of breathing oxygen from the atmosphere. Illustrate some good examples of blowing air into the balloon to illustrate the concept of air around us.

Many parents focus on the question-and-answer section in the textbook even when the child has not clearly understood the chapter. After your child reads the chapters and enjoys them, focus on objective-type questions and short questions. Then, let your child learn lengthy answers from the fair book. Provide a brief explanation for every answer before your child learns the answer.

Use the best methodologies for a better understanding

Let your child understand the concepts better by using the best tools to clarify different concepts. If your child is learning chronological historical events, then prepare a table so your child can learn chronologically. If your child is studying several classifications of various objects in subjects such as science - for example, classification of flowers, trees, etc.- prepare it in a chart form on a piece of paper or using MS Word. If your child is finding it difficult to learn lengthy answers, then prepare bullet points so your child can learn sequentially. Your child can even learn poems quickly if you chant in a proper rhythm.

Study outdoors

Your child is perhaps bored with studying indoors in a room. So your child can study in places such as a garden under the shade of a tree, a backyard, or a quiet place. Your child surely will feel motivated to study in an area surrounded by greenery everywhere. Children enjoy studying when listening to the sweet chirping sound of the birds. The terrace is also an engaging place for children.

Identify your child's learning pattern

Some children are visual-spatial learners, and some are auditory learners. If you are teaching orally to your child who is a visual-spatial learner, then your child feels obviously disinterested. Visual-spatial learners learn through pictures, images, and videos. Reading is one of the best ways to engage children who are auditory learners.

Some don'ts if your child is disinterested

Do not become aggressive

You should not become aggressive and angry if the child is not showing interest in studying. Your child is not mature enough to understand the importance of studying in life. Even if your child claims, 'I am not interested in studies' or 'I do not want to study', do not become angry, but instead be calm. If your mind is calm, only then can you understand your child's psychology.

Do not expect too much from your child

Before ensuring that the child is interested in studying, they pressure students to score higher marks. Some parents are not involved in their child's studies and yet blindly make statements such as 'You should score 100% in mathematics' or any other subject. You cannot expect your child to become a competitor when he or she is not interested in studying. First, inculcate love for studies and let your child learn to enjoy studies like play. Then, you can gradually provide useful tips to your child to help them score better marks.

A good article from the author. The parents of the present day feel that their only child should be on top anywhere and everywhere. Their expectations are very high. This attitude of the parents is very dangerous. Expectations should be realistic. They should assess the calibre of their children and expectations should be in accordance with that. All will not become Isacc Newtons. Some facts are difficult to digest but we should accept them without any hesitation.

Parents should see the interest of the child. Accordingly, we should arrange for the learning. Once the parents understand this fact, their children will flourish in the area of their interest. Otherwise, children lose their interest and may not come up well in their studies.

It is a nice presentation of the author highlighting the attitude of the parents. Their expectations are not based upon the realistic expectations. If the child is afraid of cracking out the difficult problems in the Mathematics, they would quote how the child living nearby is so much comfortable in that subject and their regular insistence would further impact the mental level of the kid.

The parents should be fully aware of the potential of the child and the parent should be wise enough to motivate the child in a more prudent manner. Creating interest in some field will be considered as a step towards changing the mental makeup of the child to his real world and we are sure that proper guidance of the parent can create a miracle in the career of the child.
