Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) is a national institute located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The institute achieved national and international recognition with leading discoveries and findings in medical and plant biotechnology. The institute also got honors for being among the top Ph.D. schools in biotechnology. Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology(RGCB) has called for applications from eligible candidates for admission in the Ph.D.program for the session starting from January 2024 vide its notification (Advt.     The students who will be selected for admission to the Ph.D. program will have to pay a laboratory fee. It can be paid to the University account directly by the student. Details of laboratory fees are as follows:
    For the first ten semesters: Rs.5000 per semester
    For every semester after ten semesters: Rs.10,000 per semester
    Note: The candidates belonging to SC/ST/EWS categories are exempt from the tuition fees.

    Eligibility Criteria

    The candidates must have a post-graduate degree in Life/ Agricultural/ Environmental/ Veterinary/ Pharmaceutical/ Medical Sciences or allied subjects (Biochemistry/ Biotechnology/ Bioinformatics/ Biophysics/ Chemistry/ Microbiology, etc. They must have scored at least 60 % marks or an equivalent grade in the UGC 10-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever ever grade system is followed. There will be a relaxation of 5% of marks for the candidates who belong to SC/ST/Differently-abled categories. Thus, they will require 55% marks or an equivalent of a grade point for admission. Besides, applicants must have a valid JRF Fellowship from any of the following agencies such as UGC/CSIR/ICMR/DBT/DST-INSPIRE/ or any other nationally competitive. The fellowship must be for 5 years.

    The upper age limit is 26 years as of January 1, 2024. However, SC/ST/Physically challenged candidates will be given age relaxation as per Government of India regulations.

    Application Procedure

    The desirous candidates must visit the official website of RGCB and check their eligibility before applying. The application for the Ph.D. program must be submitted online only.

    The application can be submitted in the following steps:
    Registration: First, the candidates must register themselves on the "Online Application Portal." For this purpose, they will need a valid and functional email ID. Registered email ID will be used for all future correspondence and will not be changed once registered on the portal.

    Application Form Fill-up: After registration, the candidates must log in on the "Online Application Portal" using login credentials (email and password) and proceed to fill Application Form for the PhD Admission 2021 - II. Now, the candidates will have to fill in all the required details.

    Application Fee Submission: After filling out the application form, an application fee of Rs.500 is to be paid online by the candidate. Online payment is to be done through 'SB Collect' of the State Bank of India. The link for the SBI Collect online payment will appear in the 'Payment Stage' of the Application Form. After fee submission, a 'Reference Number' will be generated. The candidates must note this number carefully and fill in the online application form.

    Final form submission: After the successful fee payment, the candidates will reach the last stage of the application form and finally submit an application form to complete the application process. Candidates belonging to SC/ST/EWS categories are exempted from the application processing fee and can submit the application form directly. A confirmation page will be generated upon successful submission of the application form. The candidates must download this computer-generated application page and store it safely for future use.

    Documents to be Uploaded

    The candidates must scan the below-mentioned documents before filling out the application form and keep them ready as separate files. Documents must be scanned carefully so that the uploaded files are legible and readable. Applications received with illegible documents will not be considered. The following documents are to be uploaded during the 'On-line Application' process:
  • Recent photograph-passport size (File Type: jpeg/jpg/png/gif; Max. File Size: 60 KB (Minimum size: 240 * 320 pixels)

  • Certificate/document for Age Proof (File Type: jpeg/jpg/png/gif; Max. File Size: 200 KB)

  • Marksheet /Transcripts of Qualifying exams (File Type: .zip/.rar; Max. File Size: 1 MB) (The candidates who are awaiting results of the final semester may upload the mark sheets of the first three semesters)

  • Degree Certificates of Qualifying exams (File Type: .zip/.rar; Max. File Size: 1 MB)

  • Qualified CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT/KCSTE/DST-INSPIRE/other Fellowship Certificate (File Type: .zip/.rar; Max. File Size: 1 MB)

  • A brief write-up (Maximum 300 words) describing the research interest in their handwriting (File Type: .zip/.rar; Max. File Size: 1 MB)

  • Community/Caste Certificate, in case of OBC/SC/ST/Economically Backward candidates (File Type: jpeg/jpg/png/gif; Max. File Size: 200 KB)

  • Person with Disability (PwD) Certificate (If applicable) (File Type: jpeg/jpg/png/gif; Max. File Size: 200 KB)

  • NOC Certificate (if applicable) (File Type: jpeg/jpg/png/gif; Max. File Size: 200 KB)

  • Selection Procedure

    Selection of the candidates will be done based on their academic performance and performance in the national level tests. For the selection of the students for admission to Ph.D. programs, offline interviews will be conducted. Guidelines for attending online interviews will be provided to shortlisted candidates only. The names/lists of the shortlisted candidates will be displayed on the institute's website. The candidates must check the RGCB website regularly for updates.
