Overview
Established in 1931, the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata is a well-renowned institute that offers degrees, diplomas, and research facilities in the development and application of Statistics and allied fields such as Mathematics, Quantitative Economics, and Computer Science. In addition to the Headquarters in Kolkata, ISI has set up four centres in New Delhi, Bengaluru in Karnataka, Chennai in Tamil Nadu (currently functioning at a temporary location) and Tezpur in Assam. Other campuses associated with ISI include the agricultural and sociological research branch at Giridih in Jharkhand, and units focusing on Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Coimbatore.
The hugely successful on-campus placement program has provided job opportunities with reputed organizations in a diverse range of sectors, such as banking, insurance, finance, pharma, technology, etc. The institute has also successfully organized student and faculty exchange programs with other national and international academic institutions, universities, and organisations in the industrial sector.
On campus are well-known facilities, a few of which include the Central Library with a superb collection of resources on Statistics and allied disciplines; the International Statistical Education Centre (ISEC) which provides training in Statistics to sponsored students from various developing countries; the Electronic Computer Laboratory which developed the first mechanical hand computing machine, and the first Analog computer among other wonderful achievements; and the R.C. Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security (RCBCCS) which offers training and development in Cryptology and Cyber Security, and encourages students and faculty to pursue interdisciplinary research.
Like any other campus, there are sports and recreational facilities, lecture halls, spaces dedicated to seminars, medical facilities, etc. The student hostel accommodations are offered at a nominal monthly rent with extra charges for food at the Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad campuses (the Giridih campus has basic hostel facilities), but not for all the programs. Hence, when applying, confirm the availability of hostel rooms and whether you can apply for them at the time of submitting your application for the program.
