How to improve your child's exam score

In this article, I am discussing some of the best ways to improve your child's score in exams. Children secure lesser marks due to various reasons even if they are intelligent. As a parent, you should discover the reasons for a lesser score and find the best solution.

Parents should encourage their children to score higher marks in exams. Some parents are just satisfied if the child secures a pass in class as well. A child may be promoted to a higher class but may not later study seriously. In competitive exams such as MAT, GMAT, IELTS, etc., a child should secure higher marks to be selected for further studies and acquire admission to a top institute. Some children are clever enough to score higher marks in examinations. Some children are not too bright and hence score lesser marks. But some children secure lower grades or marks despite being intelligent. Parents are shocked to view the result, as they expect their child to score better marks. To score good marks in an examination, the children should learn the techniques of writing an exam paper. They score less due to different reasons that need to be carefully accessed.

How to improve your child's exam score

Teaching your child the effective techniques of writing an exam paper

Many children are intelligent enough but are not able to score better marks as they cannot write independently. They therefore expect the supervisor to guide them throughout the exam. If the supervisor is not available to clear doubt, then they are hesitant to write. Usually, for sections such as passages or comprehension, a child should independently read the question and understand. Some children are hesitant to do so. Some questions are queer, and a child is baffled to see such unfamiliar questions. So, parents should instruct the child to solve the previous year's question paper as much as possible. They should guide the child to understand the question and accordingly provide an answer to the question.

Explaining about time management concept

Some children are unable to answer all questions due to different reasons. If they are not familiar with a question or are unable to find a solution to the question, they think too much without realizing how time is passing by. So, in such cases, they should leave space for the answer and move on to the next question. So, a parent should instruct their child to solve a question paper and teach them to effectively manage their time. Some students are easily distracted by factors such as noise, the sight of flowers, butterflies, etc. in the garden, and hence the time fleets away.

Improving concentration

Many children are not wholly concentrating while writing an exam. So, due to a lack of concentration, they do not carefully read the question and hence misunderstand the question. They do not accidentally read a question, resulting in a lower score. So, when your child is solving a question paper at home, carefully examine this factor. Your child is simply losing marks due to negligence.

Proper numbering and sequencing

Your child should mention the Roman number, heading, and question number, and then write the answer. Some children may not write the Roman number correctly or may not mention the heading. The evaluator is confused when he is not able to identify the answer. He is sometimes frustrated examining a bundle of answer papers and, hence, states the answers to be incorrect.

Check if your child has clearly understood the concept

Your child should understand the concepts in every subject perfectly, so they should write flawlessly. Sometimes, your child attempts to phrase sentences in their own way, thus altering the meaning of the concept. So, the evaluator marks the answer as incorrect.

Teach your child to write perfectly

The evaluator deducts marks for frivolous errors such as spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, punctuation errors for languages, etc. If such errors are committed frequently in a test, then the evaluator allocates lower marks for such answers. Many parents are negligent in such matters.

Follow the golden rule: 'Start early, drive slowly, and reach safety'

You have heard of this famous style of driving. As a parent, you should follow this slogan to help your child with their studies. Let your child learn the chapter as soon as the teacher provides notes. So, you are able to complete your studies before the exam date is announced. In this way, you can revise all the prescribed chapters before the exam.

Parents are the best guides for a child. If parents take care in growing up of the child while inculcating interest for studies and learning, then that is the most important achievement that parents can have. It is obvious that for achieving that challenging goal, parents themselves have to be disciplined and should have a capability of guiding the child in the proper path.

There are many good points brought out in this article by the author and using them would certainly help in the matter. I would like to add that there is no short cut to scoring high marks in any exam. The basic requirement is thorough study and then comes the art of attending to a question paper because there the importance of time management also surfaces out.

Another important thing is that the confidence level of the child also plays a crucial role in this and any inferiority complex, however small it is, would jeopardize the aim of scoring high. Child psychology tells us that we cannot force a child to learn quickly or perform well in his activities whether educational or extra-curricular. Everything takes time and patience pays the rewards.
