VJTI Institute Fellowship Ph.D. and regular Ph.D. Programs – Eligibility, Fees, Admission Process

D. program under an Institute Fellowship with a Teaching Assistantship-cum Scholarship. The Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai is an autonomous institution funded by the Govt. of Maharashtra, offering UG, PG, Diploma and Ph.D. programs in engineering and technology. This year, in addition to the regular Ph.D. programs, VJTI has launched the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program under an Institute Fellowship with Teaching Assistantship-cum Scholarship. Known for academic excellence resulting from exceptional teaching practices, top-notch facilities, and collaborations with industries, VJTI is now aiming to increase its research output with the eventual goal of getting university status. Hence, the Fellowship-associated Ph.D. full-time program has been started for the upcoming academic session of 2024.

About VJTI Ph.D. Institute Fellowship Program

Under this program, two students from each of the engineering departments will receive a monthly Teaching Assistantship-cum-Scholarship of Rs. 35,000/-.

Additionally, Teaching Assistantship-cum-Scholarships will be offered to the following-
(1) Two students of the Textile Engineering Department under the National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM) project, for which the department received a Central Govt. grant of Rs. 10 crore.
(2) Two students under the Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (COE-AI), which received a State Govt. grant of Rs. 5 crore.



About VJTI Ph.D. programs

Full-Time Ph.D. programs for Non-Sponsored/Sponsored Research Scholars: For this Ph.D. program, you must be available in the institute on a full-time basis for at least 3 years. You can avail of a research or teaching assistantship from the institute funds or research projects, but not if you are a candidate sponsored by a parent organization.

Duration- A minimum of 3 years, including course work, and a maximum of 6 years from the date of admission to the Ph.D. program (refer to the official brochure to know the relaxation in the maximum number of years).

Part-time Ph.D. programs for Sponsored Research Scholars/VJTI internal Candidates: You should have completed at least two semesters of residential requirement at the institute. Institute internal candidates have to apply as part-time research scholars only and must work under a VJTI supervisor and/or an external supervisor from IIT or any other research organization (this is optional with a recommendation from the Department Advisory Committee).

Duration- A minimum of 4 years, including course work, and a maximum of 6 years from the date of admission to the Ph.D. program (refer to the official brochure to know the relaxation in the maximum number of years).

VJTI Ph.D. Program Fees

For the academic session 2024-25, the fee for sponsored candidates is Rs. 1,17,051/-, and the fee for non-sponsored candidates is Rs. 92,051/-.

Eligibility requirements

Academic Qualifications: You should have completed a one-year/2-semester Master's degree program after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor's degree program or a 2-year/4-semester Master's degree program after a 3 year Bachelor's degree program or a qualification declared equivalent to the Master's degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body.

Academic scores: In the qualifying exam, you should have obtained at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. A relaxation of 5 % marks or its equivalent grade may be accepted for reserved category candidates as per Govt. norms.

If you are applying for admission after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor's degree program, you should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. A relaxation of 5 % marks or its equivalent grade may be accepted for reserved category candidates as per Govt. norms.

Foreign Academic Qualification: In case of an equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution, it should be an accredited one with the accreditation done by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by that country's relevant official authority.

If awaiting results: If you are waiting for the result of the qualifying postgraduate degree exam, then also you can apply for admission to a VJTI Ph.D. program. However, ensure that you have submitted the required thesis as of the day of the interview. You will be required to submit the relevant certificate (Annexure IV in the official brochure) and produce a copy of the dissertation at the time of the interview. In such a case, the admission will be provisional and the admission will be confirmed only if the result of the qualifying exam is submitted on or before October 2024.

VJTI Ph.D. Entrance Test

The Entrance test syllabus will have 50% of Research Methodology and 50% shall be subject-specific. You can check out the department-wise syllabus on pages 14 to 24 of the official brochure.

Test score requirement: You need to secure at least 50% marks in the Ph.D. entrance test to be eligible to be called for the interview, with a relaxation of 5% marks for the reserved category candidates.

You need not appear for the entrance test if (i) you have a valid score in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET ISLET/GATE/INSPIRE/PET (by Maharashtra Public Universities) or are holding a JRF of apex bodies like CSIR/UGC/ICAR/ICMR/DBT/DST/ICSSR; (ii) You are a Ph.D. degree holder of the University of Mumbai or any other recognized University.

Selection process

Selection is based on merit and performance during the written test and interview and not merely based on your academic qualifications. VJTI may give admission to students who qualify for fellowship/scholarship in UGC- NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and similar National level tests based on an interview. The weightage given is- 70% for the entrance test and 30% for your performance in the interview/viva voce.

How to apply

The application should be submitted along with all the relevant certificates/documents and the application processing fee.

Application fee: The application processing fee for admission to the VJTI Ph.D. programs for the academic session 2024-25 is Rs. 500/- for General Category candidates, and Rs. 300/- for reserved category candidates [SC, ST, VJ/DT- NT(A), NT(B), NT(C), NT(D), OBC, SBC, EBC, EWS & Differently abled persons]. This fee should be paid online at https://www.onlinesbi.com (refer to page 13 of the official brochure for instructions on payment of this fee).

List of documents: The attested photocopies of the following documents/certificates should be attached with the application form at the time of submission, otherwise you will not be shortlisted for the Ph. D. admission process-
  1. Certificate of Indian Nationality: In place of the Certificate of Indian Nationality, you can submit any of these- (i) The Indian Passport with your name (the appropriate authorities should issue it); (ii) The School Leaving Certificate indicating that you are of Indian nationality; (iii) Your birth certificate indicating that you place of birth is within India.

  2. Certificates and mark sheets: The Graduation degree certificate, the final year marks list/Grade sheet, the Postgraduate degree certificate, and the Postgraduate final year marks list/Grade sheet.

  3. Experience: Work/Research experience Certificates, if applicable.

  4. Other certificates: Caste certificate, Caste validity certificate, Non-Creamy Layer certificate, Differently abled certificate, if applicable.

  5. Proof of exemption for the written test, if applicable.

  6. Format for Sponsorship Letter for full-time/part-time sponsored candidate (the format is available in Annexure II of the official brochure).

  7. Format for NOC for full-time/part-time sponsored candidate (the format is available in Annexure II of the official brochure).

  8. Format of Certificate for candidates who have appeared in the qualifying degree exam (M.E./M.Tech/MSc/MCA/B.E/B.Tech/UG) in the relevant field or an equivalent exam and whose dissertation is submitted (the format is available in Annexure IV of the official brochure and it must be filled in by the respective organization on their letterhead only).

  11. Statement of purpose justifying the research area you wish to pursue (it should be only one page).

  • Refer to the official brochure to know the Discipline Code number, which will be required for the online application form.

  • Ensure that you enter the correct category of admission, that is, full-time or part-time, as a change in this will not be allowed at the time of the exam or at the time of admission to the Ph.D. program.

  • If you are applying for a full-time or part-time Ph.D. program as a sponsored candidate, along with the application form you need to produce (i) a sponsorship letter in the prescribed format (Annexure-II in the official brochure) and (ii) a 'No Objection Certificate' from the employer in the prescribed format (Annexure-III in the official brochure).




Important dates for 2024-25 VJTI Ph.D. Admissions

Application dates-
Applications opened on 20th May 2024, and will close at 5 p.m. on 11th June 2024.
The names of candidates shortlisted for admission will be displayed on the official website on 25th June 2024.
A clarification or objection on shortlisted candidates can be sent by email to phd_admission@vjti.ac.in by 28th June 2024 before 4.30 p.m.

Post-application schedule-
The list of corrected shortlisted candidates will be displayed on the official website on 4th July 2024.
The offline Test by the respective Departments is scheduled for 22nd July 2024.
Interviews will be conducted by the respective Departments at the VJTI campus on 23rd and 24th July 2024.
The Centralized Interview at the Institute level for shortlisted candidates at the Department level will be conducted on the 26th and 27th of July 2024.
The final Merit List will be displayed on the official website on 31st July 2024.
The last day to confirm provisional admission by paying the fees is 5th August 2024.
