Important to know: A student can apply for the JNVST only once. When the verification process is done of the data submitted during registration, if it is discovered that the student had applied at any time in earlier years, the application will be rejected. Secondly, a student who gets provisional admission to one JNV cannot get admission to any other JNV. NVS will not accept any request from parents to shift their ward to another JNV on account of the parent shifting to another State or District or on grounds of the medium of instruction in the JNV concerned, or other reasons. Thirdly, it is mandatory to submit the bonafide residence certificate of the parent as proof of the district where the student studied Class V and applied for JNVST. Fourthly, it is mandatory to produce a copy of the student's birth certificate issued by the competent Govt. authority at the time of admission.
JNV Main Features
Free education: Since the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) is an autonomous organization under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, the JNVs are fully financed by the Govt. under the administration of NVS. Hence, the co-educational residential schools provide free education that covers the cost of board and lodging, the school uniform and school textbooks. It is only when the student enters Class IX and subsequently up to Class XII, that parents are required to pay a nominal fee of Rs. 600/- per month, which goes towards Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN). This monthly fee is not required to be paid by students belonging to SC/ST categories, Divyang students, girls and those whose family income is below the poverty line (BPL category students). However, students who are wards of Govt. employees and who are other than students of Classes VI to VIII, all SC/ST, girls, and children of BPL families will need to pay Rs.1500/- per month or the actual Children Education Allowance received by the parent per month, whichever is less.
Medium of Teaching: The medium of instruction in JNVs is the mother tongue or regional language up to Class VIII, and thereafter Maths and Science are taught in English, while Social Science is taught in Hindi. This ensures that a student is competent in at least three languages.
JNV Migration Requirement: National integration is promoted through the migration of students from a Hindi-speaking to a non-Hindi-speaking State and vice-versa for one academic year when the students are promoted to Class IX. If the parent or the student selected for migration refuses to migrate, then the student will no longer be permitted to continue in the JNV.
JNV Admission Selection Process: Admission to JNVs is strictly based on merit through the JNVST (the selection test) and on fulfillment of the NVS criteria, with a maximum of 80 students getting admission to Class VI in each Vidyalaya, subject to availability of suitable candidates. The number of seats may be reduced to half and NVS may withhold the JNVST result and/or withhold admission and/or may even not conduct the JNVST in case of inadequate accommodation or for any other administrative reason.
JNV Admissions 2025 Eligibility Requirements
Age criterion: The student must not have been born before 1st May 2013 and after 31st July 2015 (both dates are inclusive). The student will be required to produce a copy of the birth certificate issued by a competent Govt. authority at the time of admission. This will apply to candidates of all categories. In case there is any doubt and the student may be considered to be over age, as compared to the age recorded in the certificate, a Medical Board will check for confirmation of the age. The Board's decision will then be treated as binding and final.
Current residential status: Admission is based on the District where the student resides, That is, the student who is provisionally selected based on the JNVST score will be admitted only in the JNV located in the district from where he/she is residing and studying in Class V during 2024-25 and appearing for the JNVST.
Who are ineligible to apply and appear for JNVST: (i) A student who has passed Class V before the session of 2024-2025. (ii) Repeater candidates - NVS will compare the application data of the previous year(s) to identify the repeater candidates. If such data is found, then the student will not be allowed to be admitted to a JNV through JNVST 2025. (ii) A student who has not been promoted and admitted to Class V before 31st July 2024. (iii) A student who has already passed/studied Class V in previous academic sessions.JNVST Format for 2025 Admissions
