It is believed that the present city of Visakhapatnam originated from an ancient temple built in honour of Vaisakh, the son of Shiva and Parvati who is also the god of war and the ruler of planet mars. The temple was built between the 11th and 12th centuries. The temple was washed away around 100 years ago in cyclonic storms.
