3 best ways to take care of your teeth

Want to know how to maintain good oral hygiene by caring for your teeth?Three of the basic aspects, namely brushing right, eating right and making regular visits to the dentist, are covered in this article.

It is unfortunate that people take a good deal of trouble to stay fit by going to the gym, following diet plans, etc but often forget to neglect their pearls, that is, their teeth. It does not need rocket science to understand how to take basic care of one's teeth.

Three of the basic aspects are brushing right, eating right and making regular visits to the Dentist.

Brushing right

Most Dentists generally advice you to brush your teeth with toothpaste twice a day. Follow this diligently in the morning as soon as you get up and at night before sleeping. You can use a toothbrush with soft bristles. If you have extra-sensitive teeth, use the toothpastes that are available especially for the purpose but do consult your Dentist on the use of such toothpastes.

How to brush teeth in the correct manner

It is not enough to merely jab at the teeth with a brush any which way. Agreed, you are inevitably in a rush to set off to work. That does not mean putting a large blob of toothpaste on the toothbrush and attacking your teeth vigorously! First of all, don't overuse the paste. Secondly, be gentle while brushing. Thirdly, don't move the brush vigorously back and forth. You need to slightly tilt the brush from the gum line – that is, for upper teeth, the brush should move downwards and for lower teeth the brush should move upwards. Make sure you use the same movements for the inside part of the teeth and on the flat surface where you chew / bite food.

  1. Use a good flossing thread last thing at night to remove particles of food that inevitably make their way between teeth; these tiny particles form plaque around the teeth and will cause decay.

  2. Mark on your calendar the day you buy a new toothbrush and make sure you change it at the end of three months.

Eating right

Your teeth as well as gums need nutritious food as much as your body. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Drinking juices is good, too, but avoid sweetening them.

As for drinks, many people have an over-fondness for colas and other types of soft drinks. You must restrict these as they are strong attackers of the enamel on your teeth.

You absolutely must avoid betel nut and suparis. Constant chewing of these in the long term will cause lesions in your mouth and on your tongue and may develop into oral cancer.

Visiting the Dentist

Always remember that prevention is better than cure. This means visiting the Dentist without fail at least twice a year and every 3 months if you have oral problems, such as Oral Lichenplanus . With regular check-ups, the Dentist can find out at an early stage if, for example, you have some kind of general mouth disease or specific gum disease. The sooner you are aware of some dental problem, the better. The Dentist will advice you on prevention of further decay and prescribe proper medication. Do remember to inform the Dentist of any medicines that you are already taking, especially if you are a heart patient, a pregnant lady or are suffering from any allergies .

In addition to the above basic steps, keep away from cigarettes and beedis - you won't even realize when oral cancer will strike. Excessive smoking, like excessive consumption of tobacco and paan masala, can ravage the mouth. You may be enjoying just a single cigarette a day, but it won't be long before you become totally addicted to it. Just stay away from the first one and the next automatically won't follow. Consult your Dentist on how to get de-addicted from smoking. It will do you a world of good, not to mention keeping the lungs clean of those around you too; your family members, friends and colleagues near you when you smoke also get affected indirectly.

To sum up: Proper nutrition, good brushing techniques and periodical visits to the Dentist will ensure healthy teeth and gums.

Quit smoking and other bad habits and take care of your 32 pearls to stay healthy with good oral hygiene – always!

Here are a few essential guidelines to follow for healthy teeth and gums -

1. The author has mentioned consulting a dentist before using toothpaste for sensitive teeth. However, people generally avoid doing so and resort to their own practices, such as buying a toothpaste for sensitive teeth off the shelf. A few such paste come with a warning to not use them continuously for prolonged period. Consumers must read the fine print before randomly buying toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
2. Healthy teeth need a healthy diet. The focus must also be on calcium rich foods and vitamin D, as both help in keeping the teeth strong.
3. Chewing of betel nuts and bones can damage the crown of your teeth. Avoid eating anything hard or using your teeth as a tool to crack open walnuts or remove the lid from a bottle. This can cause fissures and/or damage the enamel on the teeth.
4. Flossing must be made a habit. It is a way of removing food particles that get stuck between teeth. Left in the tiny crevices, the food particles begin to decay and this can cause mouth odour and decay of adjoining teeth.

While I appreciate the author for giving nice tips on how to maintain good teeth, I want to narrate here one experience of my relative who went to a dentist and then problems started for him. He was in his 40's and was having good health and eating habits. He had some tartar formation in his teeth and wanted to remove it. He approached a lady dentist who promised total clean up of teeth and charged huge fees. In the process of removing hard tartar, she loosened the gums in such a way that all the teeth have started shaking and began to fall one after another. When he went back to her with complaint, she told him that he is a sugar patient and hence the tooth would fall one after other. Now the result is that he is having hardly 10 tooth altogether as one after other all shaking tooth were falling. Now what is the solution for him ?

Ms.Vandana has narrated the care we have to take about our 32 pearls. Nice. I learned some good points.

I prefer brushing after each eating. Generally what happens when we eat food, small pieces of food may get in between the teeth. They will not go out by simple washing. Many people use toothpick for removing these items. But it is not a good practice. Instead, if you brush your teeth after lunch and after dinner, they will be more strong. Foul smell from the mouth can also be avoided.
Even if we take all the care, it is always advisable to visit a dentist at least once in six months for better teeth.

The uthor has very well described the three best ways that help to maintain oral hygiene and prevent decaying of teeth. I would like to add a few more practices that are related to good oral hygiene.

It is important to replace the toothbrush every three months. Worn out bristles do not do any good even if a person brushes twice a day daily. After two to three months, bristles bent and become inefficient in giving proper cleaning. Moreover, in the process, bristles get sharpened. Using such toothbrushes will do more harm rather than good. Such bristles may cause damage to gums and as a result, gums start bleeding and in certain cases may become infected. Even those who use electric toothbrush should replace its head within three months.

Don’t cultivate the habit of brushing immediately after dinner time. It is important to wait for at least half an hour. Acid gets produced in the oral cavity during the chewing process. This acid can soften the outermost layer enamel. Brushing immediately can risk the enamel of going through wearing and tearing process.

Use kinds of toothpaste that are rich in fluoride. It is important to increase enamel strength. The stronger the outer layer is the more resistance it will offer to caries and germs. Thus, it will prevent the decaying of teeth in the long term.

Floss before brushing the teeth. Use of floss will clean the side of teeth. After when teeth are brushed, the fluoride easily reaches out the sides and helps in strengthening enamel surface. Those who are not comfortable with floss can use interdental cleaner which is nothing but a tiny brush or stick that can easily get between the sides of teeth.

Mouthwash also helps greatly when it comes to killing bacterial and dealing with oral hygiene. It prevents halitosis. It is commercially available and one can also make use of a salt solution that is prepared at home.
