Architects are the ‘brains' behind the structure of modern society. They conceive, plan and develop design for the construction and renovation of buildings and structures.

The work

The work of an architect is varied, challenging and brings alive the creativity in oneself. They not only design a building, but also see other aspects like how it will be used, what it will cost and how it will be built.

First they prepare sketches, scale-size construction drawings and a report. The initial designs and proposals are often finalized after a series of meetings with clients, consultants, planning officials and building commissioners. Once the initial proposal are discussed and accepted, architects develop final construction plans that outline outer and inner appearance, utilities systems, and landscaping or other site plans. They may also supervise the construction of the building.

Except designing buildings architects also render services in evaluation of lands and buildings for insurance, sale, buildings for insurance, sale mortgage, transfer, taxation and other purposes. They work closely with the other members of the building team, the engineer, the surveyor the planners and the city officials as well as the client.

Education and skill

To be an architect, one should have at least a bachelor's degree in architecture (B. Arch.). The eligibility for this course if 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Selection is usually through an aptitude test and written examination. Aptitude test is held to judge the applicant's visual and spatial (having to do with space) perception, creative ability, imagination, aesthetic sensitivity etc. After finishing the course an architect must register with the Council of Architecture to practice as an independent architect.

The prospective architect should have that intelligence and enquiring open mindedness, which fosters creativity and should be analytical and self-critical. It is as asset, if one make free hand sketches and have skill in CAD (Computer Aided Design). Literacy and numeracy are vital, besides the ability to work in teams.

Initial earning of an architect is not very high, because this is a field where a student has to learn a lot even after finishing the course. Job prospects

Architects may work for architectural, engineering and planning firms, for government agencies, for private consultants, multinational corporate sectors for development and real estate companies. Those with the right aptitude may work for themselves in their own firm. Opportunities in this field are highly dependent on the level of local construction. Big cities are developing vary fast, and construction of commercial as well as residential buildings are going on. Even renovation of old buildings is on the rise. This trend is especially good for architects, as it provides many job opportunities.
