My interview experience with Tata Consulting Engineers

In this article I write about my interview with Tata Consulting Engineers and how I got selected even when I was not able to answer some of the important questions in the interview.

First they had a written screening test which comprised of 30 technical and 30 aptitude questions. We were asked to write both the tests in separate half hours. I was selected for interview and I was the first one. He started by asking HR questions.

Q: Tell me about yourself?
I told him my name, parents and brother's name, their occupation and then shifted to my school experience. I also added that I joined Anna University to get into a top notch IT company. But after getting into 4th semester I really started enjoying the Civil field and also added that I didn't attend any interview for software jobs.

Q: Good. Why you studied Java course then?

A: As I told u sir I got special interest in construction field only during 4th semester I had finish that course when I was studying 2nd semester itself.

Q: Oh. Well. Then. Tell what is the bending moment of a simply supported beam with a u.d.l in it?

A: It's wl2/8.

Q: What is it's deflection

A: I really don't know the answer sir. But I can derive it.

The interviewer gave me a paper and I started deriving using Macaulays' formula. The answer was wrong. But I explained him the procedure and he was satisfied with it. He himself said that there was some small calculation error and it doesn't matter much. He asked me to draw bending moment diagrams for all types of beams with u.d.l which I accomplished without much difficulty.

Already half an hour was over. He just asked me some questions from code book IS 456 for which I couldn't respond. I just said him that we never had the need to study and learn things given in code book by heart, because we were allowed to take them inside examination halls. He just nodded and shook hands with me and showed the way out.

Fortunately I was selected and till now I never know why. If you look back, I didn't derive the one he asked. I didn't know the answers for questions asked from code book IS 456 which is the bible for civil engineers. My HR answers fetched me a job I hope.

With regards,
Nirmal
