Career in Indian Army

A career in the armed forces holds the promise of bringing honour, glory, high social standing, and a privileged lifestyle.

The Work : The basic responsibility of the Army is to defend the geographical boundaries of the country against all external and internal threats. In addition, the Army is often required to assist the civil administration during internal security disturbances and in the maintenance of law and order, in organizing relief operations during natural calamities like floods, earthquakes and cyclones and in the maintenance of essential services.

The army can be divided into two main areas : Combat and non-combant. Combat arms, the fighting forces, include Armoured Corps, Infantry and Artillery. Non-combatant includes several support services like Army service corps, Ordinance corps, Army education corps, Engineers, Signals corps, Intelligence corps, Army Medical corps, Remount Veterinary Corps and Judge Advocate General’s Branch.

The choice of arms allotted to a newly commissioned officer depends upon a combination of his merit and also his choice. One this is decided, he joins a regiment of that particular arm. Each regiment has its own set of traditional, rituals, symbols and guiding principles.

There are two options for the entry into Indian Armed forces. Permanent Commission offers a carreer in the Armed Forces till you retire. Short Service Commission offers you the opportunity to join the Armed Forces for five years, initially. At the end of this period one can either opt for further extension, or for permanent commission or even opt out.

Scheme : Direct Entry.
Eligibility : Graduation
Selection Process : CDSE exam (conducted by the Union Public Service Commission and interview).

Scheme : University Entry Scheme
Eligibility : Final and per final year students of an engineering degree course.
Selection Process : Interview.

Scheme : 10+2 PCM (Tech)
Eligibility : 10+2
Selection Process : Apply directly to the Recruitment directorate.

Scheme : Women’s Special Entry
Eligibility : Graduates / Post graduates.
Selection Process : Interview.

Scheme : Through NCC
Eligibility : Graduate
Selection Process : Interview.

A soldier’s required educational qualifications depend on the category. A Soldier General Duty, Technical, Clerk, Storekeeper and Nursing. Assistant all require a 10th pass. A Havildar, Religious Teacher, Caterer or Cartographer has to be a graduate.

- High level of physical fitness.
- Resilient, resourceful.
- Ability to remain calm and work efficiently and confidently even in battle.

Salary scales differ from rank to rank. In addition to their basic pay, army officers enjoy a number of additional allowances such as Dearness Allowance, Outfit Allowance, and extra facilities such as Leave benefit and travel concession, furnished accommodation at concessional rates, free medical treatment for officers and their families, free ration etc. So the basic pay might not seem exciting enough, but the perks more than make up for it.
