College of Engg Guindy (CEG) , Anna University.

The college located in the Anna University campus of Guindy, is where I did my Btech IT during 2003-2007.

Some unique things about the college :

As it is one of the autonomous college of the University, the syllabus, exam schedule, grading, student- staff relations, all are different.

1. There is a unique grading system, which is on the scale of 10. The GPA(Grade Point Average) and CGPA(Cumulative Grade Point Average) are the main things that value the performance of a student, compared to the Aggregate percentage of other colleges under Anna University.


2. Since the college is located in the university campus itself, there are many seperate rules that are there for the students, unlike the other colleges.
   
   Eg. When the University advised all the college students not to use the mobiles in college campus, we were advised not to use them during class hours.
   
   The dress code, is another unique kind, which was implemented only during the later part of the course. Until then, girls were allowed to wear skirts and T-Shirts. Boys were told not to wear V-Neck T-Shirts.


3. Most of the people, government officials, private company employees, do not know the college by its name. If somebody says he is from CEG, or college of engg Guindy, the next question put forward is where is that college? People know this college as Anna University College.


4. As a student of this college we get a lot of recognition in other colleges, and outside world, whether it is in working concern or the social institution. The Student of CEG is supposed to be master in his specialization, compared to any other student from other private colleges.


5. The university campus is also shared by AC Tech college, and School of Architecture and Planning. So at any point of the year, the campus is busy with activity, may it be cultural functions, or educational events. eg. Techofes, abacus etc.


6. The college has a good air - conditioned auditorium(Vivekananda), and a big central Library. The auditorium cannot accommodate more than 300, that is one of the main concerns of the authorities.


7. There is a cooperative Society, which sells stationery. While I was in the 2nd year, the ADAYAR Bakery opened a stall in the same.


8. One of the main things the students speak of is the college canteen(CEG canteen) which is famous for its less price food items. This was the first canteen, where the sale of Coke, Pepsi and other beverages was stopped, as instructed by the VC.


9. The exam papers are corrected by the same staff who take the classes, except when the paper is common for more than 2 departments. So the drawback is if you don't go well with the staffs, you will not get a decent grade. But that doesn't mean if you bribe the staffs, they will give good grades. The grades have nothing to do with the money. If you are less disciplined, and intolerable in the class, the particular staff will degrade you.


10. The other important difference between this college and the private colleges, is the importance given to the internal assessment. In private colleges it is 20%, where as in CEG, the internal assessment carries equal weight-age as the external. So if you do not take 1 of the 3 internal assessments, or do not perform well in it, it will result in very low grades.
