College of Fisheries was the third college with this specialization in the country. It was originally started in the Kerala Agricultural University campus at Mannuthy, Thrissur. Later it was shifted to its own campus at Panangad, Kochi. It offered professional degree programme in fisheries. It was a four year programme. In the beginning a trimester system was followed and later changed over to semester system. Hence an eight semester programme with external(60%) and internal(40%) assessment was followed. Students were selected based on an entrance examination conducted by Kerala Government. ICAR also select five students on all India basis.
Students study various topics related to fisheries, so that they become professional in the field. Fishery biology, aquaculture, fish processing, fishing craft technology, fishery management, Fishery hydrography and related other topics.
After finishing the degree programme (B.F.Sc), they can opt for different Post graduate programmes leading to M.F.Sc degree. College started PG programmes in Aquaculture, fishery biology, fish processing, fishery hydrography and Fisheries extension. Later Ph.D. programmes were also started.
